Efficient Floorstander
In order to work well in both small rooms and big rooms, here are some of the things that imo help:1. A well-controlled, uniform radiation pattern. The well-controlled part allows you to aim the pattern to avoid early sidewall reflections (which h...
Speakers that do pianos really well
I use the disc "Red Descending" by Seth Kaufman. I was fortunate enough to hear Seth live on many occasions back when we both lived in New Orleans, to the point where, when that disc first came out, I asked him it if was the same piano because it ...
What the best 89-90 db speaker I can buy for 3k?
Thanks for the mention, Richardyc! Basically my game plan is to start out with good prosound drivers and then thoroughly beat them into submission. The prosound part = good dynamics & good efficiency. The beating into submission part = smoothe...

My apologies to Margot also... sometimes the nerd in me takes over, and this time it ran rampant.Duke

Hi Bob,Good catch! I mis-used (and mis-spelled) the term "vicious cycle"; it only becomes such when a human enters the loop and keeps turning the volume control up higher and higher because he's not hearing the volume level increase as much as he ...

Vapor1, I don't think I've ever seen published Klippel data on thermal compression. An explanatory graph on Klippel's website implies that thermal compression in the neighborhood of 3-4 dB is normal:http://www.klippel.de/measurements/nonlinear-dis...

Sorry I wasn't clear, Bob! Let me try again.First a bit of background that I left out: Thermal compression is caused by the voice coil heating up which causes its resistance to rise (there are other bad things that happen as well, but this is the ...
Suggestions short 3' tall floorstander?
If impact and dynamics are high on your list of priorities, imo high quality prosound drivers are a viable way to get there. Tyler Acoustics and Pi Speakers both have models that fall within your height and price range. Yours truly has done some s...

"A speaker is either able to resolve details better than another one or it's not, level isn't going to change that."That is true in many cases, and would probably be true in all cases if the spectral balance didn't change with volume level. But so...
why no recent Merlin speaker reviews?
I suppose there are two ways of looking at the relatively large number of new versions Bobby has come out with over the years. One viewpoint has already been expressed in this thread, and another would be that he continues to refine and improve on...
Speakers with fullness and weight?
Thanks for your kind words, Ngjockey and Mapman and Seikosha and Hesson11. Bob mentioned the Allison effect, which has to do with the impact of nearby room boundaries on the frequency response curve at lower frequencies, focusing on eliminating th...
Speakers with fullness and weight?
Amps + speakers + room form a "system within a system", of sorts. Boundary reinforcement can warm up otherwise thin-sounding speakers. Likewise a (low damping factor) tube amp can warm up otherwise thin-sounding speakers. Most speakers exhibit a p...
Does this speaker exist?
Musicfile wrote: "Duke you have some great speakers as well"Thank you very much, but I don't have anything that meets the "small footprint" requirement. I tend to use prosound drivers which inherently do some things well, but delivering good bass ...

I second the recommendation of Tonian Labs. Tony Minasian does excellent work.
Help problem with Soundlab Dynastats
Sounds to me like either the panels aren't getting charged up, or the signal from the amp is not reaching them, or both. My first guess would be that one or more of the wires going from the panels into the electronics is not pushed into its socket...
