What speaker to replace ESL 63?
Jdanielh -The Quad 63's are a very tough act to follow - utterly boxless sound, electrostatic clarity, single-driver coherence, dipole radiation, and very nice voicing. Personally, I'm a big fan of dipole systems. I love what dipoles do, especiall...
Kharma 1.0/ Talon Khorus/Watt Puppy 6 or Sonata?
First of all, congrats on being a Viva owner! That's a wonderful little amp you have there. Of the speakers on your list, I like the Kharma. I sell full range electrostats, and the Kharma 1.0 is almost unique among dynamic speakers in its price ra...
Speaker Quest Revised
If your priorities are timbre, holographic imaging, and smoothness, the Vandy's are a very good suggestion. Maggie 1.6's will give you excellent timbre and smoothness, but will not give you pinpoint imaging. To me, it's a worthwhile tradeoff - I p...
From Maggies 1.6QR to B&W N805. Upgrading or Downgrading?
If you've lived with Maggie 1.6's, you're going to have a very hard time going back to box speakers. In a small room like yours, what would be ideal is a speaker that doesn't sound boxy, whose directional characteristics don't make a bad situation...
What music is best for an Audiophile Society Meeting?
Greetings Hififarm - is that you, Steve?Congrats on becoming a Piega dealer! I'm also involved in the audio club here in New Orleans, and in my experience people get tired of hearing the standard audiophile fare (Diana Krall, etc) all the time. So...
Timbrel Accuracy
Well, interesting responses above indeed!Taking a break from my skipping and jumping, I see that two of the lines I carry, Thor and Atma-Sphere, have already been recommended. I love it when people agree with me.I might add that Atma-Sphere pre-am...
Speaker placement
Momma always said, "Boxy is as boxy does". There will be a limit to how much you can reduce boxiness by repositioning your speakers. You see, boxiness is caused primarily by internal resonances that re-radiate through the drivers and/or through th...
what speakers do the best "disappearing act"??
Excellent points on quality control, Subaruguru! Ultimately, I found driver-to-driver inconsistencies to limit what I could accomplish on my own during my years as an amateur speaker builder. Now that I think about it, the three speakers I mention...
Best speaker cable for Martin Logan Monolith II's??
Greetings!I sell Sound Lab speakers, which include full range as well as hybrid electrostats. I like the Martin Monoliths quite a bit - too bad they discontinued that model, as I think it does some things better than its successors.I've devoted qu...
Can anyone help me to decide which pre-amp is better ?
Jeff -Of the preamps you mention, I would go with the CAT. When I was shopping for the best preamp for my demo system, three brands stood out to me: CAT, Lamm, and Thor. I chose to become a Thor dealer, but think highly of the other two.
what speakers do the best "disappearing act"??
Two of the three best disappearing acts I've heard were by speakers that are no longer in production. The first was the Meridian M2. This little beauty used a pair of 5 1/2" KEF woofers and a 2" (that's not a misprint) KEF dome tweeter. This was a...
Speaker vs. Room Size
Greetings Bin,You bring up a classic dilemma - namely, how to get natural sound in a small room at an affordable price. I take it you're willing to position the speakers as needed to get good sound. One of the major hurdles in a small room is gett...
Tweeter for Fried C3/L?
I am under the impression that at least some Frieds used Hiquphon tweeters, and perhaps that's what's in the C3/L. You might try www.zalytron.com. By the way, congrats on being a Fried owner.
"Fast sounding tube amp" with plenty of power? any?
In my post above, that should have been "Spectral" instead of "Spectron".
"Fast sounding tube amp" with plenty of power? any?
Among the fastest amps in the world are Atma-Sphere's line of OTL tube amps, which includes the 220-watt MA2 MK2 monoblocks. Atma-Sphere amps boast a slew rate of 600 volts per microsecond! Very few amplifiers even list their slew rate any more, b...
