If you don't have a wide sweet spot, are you really an audiophile?
There is another, somewhat unorthodox technique for getting a wide sweet spot, which works well with controlled-pattern speakers. By way of background: The ear localizes sound by two mechanisms: Arrival time, and intensity. If the arrival times ...
Critical subwoofer tip
In the bass region, the in-room frequency response is by far what matters the most to the ears. You see, the ear’s time-domain resolution is very poor at long wavelengths: We cannot even detect the PRESENCE of bass energy from less than one wavele...
I expected more from my speakers (not high end)
Johngaltwho, I just checked the classifieds to see what was available in the two grand ballpark and one of my speakers was there, a custom version of the (discontinued) Planetarium Alpha.  This is a high efficiency system with a built-in down-firi...
Anyone try stuffing their ports?
@roxy54 wrote: "I do not understand the idea of manufacturers or reviewers suggesting that ports should be stuffed with plugs if the end user is having problems with the bass. After all. speakers that are sealed boxes were designed to be sealed, a...
Reliability of Dutch & Dutch 8C speakers
I have two customers who own the Dutch & Dutch 8c. One is a very experienced ultra-hard-core audiophile with a superb dedicated room, and the other is an extremely meticulous recording engineer. The latter owns the first pair that came into th...

Bookshelf Speaker Stand Difference?
@gdnrbob, the junction between stand and speaker will not be wood-on-wood. We have no plans to include a dedicated isolation base like the Townshend Isolation bars.  Nothing against them!  But we'd rather people make their own choices in that area...
Bookshelf Speaker Stand Difference?
@dadork, thank you very much. We’ll certainly try not to overprice them, but they are considerably more parts-and-labor-intensive than either a comparable subwoofer or a comparable speaker stand would be. The new version's footprint won't be as de...
Bookshelf Speaker Stand Difference?
Gdnrbob asked, " Please, can you tell us why you want to do this? " We make a stand which includes a subwoofer and an up-and-back firing driver. The purpose of the subwoofer is self-evident, and the purpose of the up-and-back firing driver is to m...

Bookshelf Speaker Stand Difference?
" speaker stands need crossovers? Didnt know that "  To the best of my knowledge mine is the only one that does.  It's a bit unorthodox.  Duke
Bookshelf Speaker Stand Difference?
You can use museum putty to get a secure connection between speaker and stand. I'm finishing up the crossover for an expensive speaker stand today.  Duke
subwoofer advice
Snapsnap, if I understand correctly, you want to power your passive subs with the amplifiers which are already in your active subs, is that right?   If so, that's extremely unlikely to be feasible.  The amps in your active subs are matched to the ...
Tweeter/Mid minimum amp power rating for magnepan 20.1 in active setup?
Thank you, psilonaught. Eyeballing Stereophile’s impedance curve of the MG-20, it looks like 4 ohms nominal (for the mid/tweet section) with a ballpark 12-ohm peak a little south of 2 kHz. That’s a 3-to-1 peak; not horrendous, but not insignifican...
