Tube amp for rock? Newb Questions Hi Zamdrang, I'll put it this way:If you are investing in a tube amplifier, any tube amplifier, that investment dollar will be best served by a speaker that is at least 8 ohms rather than 4, all other things being equal. Sixteen ohms can often be ...
Tube amp for rock? Newb Questions Hi Zamdrang, if you want punch and dynamics without brightness, consider that you will have to work with an amplifier that is zero feedback. Amps with feedback have enhanced high order odd harmonics, which the ear uses as loudness cues. This works...

Stereophile - MF Supercharger article-add 550W/ch. Hi db, I don't think high-ordered odd harmonics do add to our lives. The current state of high-end audio suggests that they don't. Their rarity in nature might mean that less brain power is required to detect the change in volume, but what is impo...
Stereophile - MF Supercharger article-add 550W/ch. Hi Dbphd, the way that tubes operate closer to the rules of human hearing is through the lack of odd-ordered harmonics, which comes from greater linearity and less need for feedback. Feedback runs counter to the rules of human hearing (i.e. adds h...
Stereophile - MF Supercharger article-add 550W/ch. db, don't think for a minute that transistor amps don't have colorations too! My experience is that it is a rare transistor amp that does not also sound like transistors- I can count them on one hand. No wonder that a 'tube-like' sound is used as ...
Preamp Deal of the Century Better yet, ask him what he used to voice out the phono section of the kind of preamp you have.FWIW, in the design of a phono section, that phono section is not 'voiced' although that is a common misconception. If the design is competent, the RIAA...
Stereophile - MF Supercharger article-add 550W/ch. FWIW the MBL 101s don't really need as much power as people think. Yes, they have low measured efficiency at 1 meter, but as soon as the speaker is put in a real room, the sound radiating in directions other than the one that the microphone was pl...
What happened to Ei? Thanks for the update Dejanm.I'll second that!
External step-up transformer with Io or MP-1 Given the choice, I think I would prefer analog though a really good transformer than listen to digital :)
What happened to Ei? The US (NATO) bombed the factory a few years back.We were still able to get EI tubes 2 years ago, but they don't /didn't really make anything we use but 12AT7s.
External step-up transformer with Io or MP-1 I've tried the MP-1 both ways- a few years ago some ex-partners of mine were real advocates of the SUT. My experience is that while you can get the overall setup to be quieter, ultimately you find that the phono is not as interesting as before- br...
Transfiguration Orpheus - Has anyone tried it ? I just got the Orpheus, and I run it in the Triplanar Mk7. Its anything but tweaky, but very, very nice.
Explain impedence matching please The general rule of thumb is that the preamp have 1/10 the output impedance with respect to the input impedance of the amplifier. It should not exceed that value at all audio frequencies. In the case you describe above, no worries.
Balanced ----- Unbalanced---- Points well taken Herman, but I don't recall suggesting that your stereo was noisy and had phone lines in it?? |
