Roger Sanders is back
After having been through something that was frighteningly similar, I am very pleased to see that y'all have sorted things out and are back to give it another shot. Best of luck to you!
Need help understanding tube wpc
"After all, musical peaks are voltage driven, not current driven."In the world I live in, musical peaks being reproduced by a power amp produce power, not merely voltage. Voltage in a speaker cannot exist without current and this is inviably defin...
Need help understanding tube wpc
"The biggest problem with tubed gear is that it typically lacks current and is bandwidth limited, both on top and bottom. The lack of current is what gives most tubed gear that "round, tubby" bass that many folks dislike. At the same time, this "a...
Whats more important? Speaker or the Amp
I have to disagree with some of you here. If you have a great speaker, there is no way it will sound all that great if it exposes a poor amplifier. EX.: try putting a cheap transistor amp on a good horn system- you will regret it. Ex.: put a cheap...
Whats more important? Speaker or the Amp
There are two standards in place for speaker and amplifier design, and if you use an amplifier with a speaker of the other standard, or vice versa, you very likely will have an incompatability. This is not a matter of taste, nor is it a matter of ...
Avantgarde Trios, SETs, and Impedance Curves
A friend of mine was using the 45-based Kondo, which realistically makes about .75-1 watt. This ought to be enough on the Trio, but he was unable to run the amp so there was not a high frequency rolloff. The problem is that the midrange unit is not...
Avantgarde Trios, SETs, and Impedance Curves
The problem is that really low output impedance amplifiers don't sound right on highly reactive/high efficiency speakers (like most horns). There are interactions that result in shrillness. So a tube amp is indicated...
Avantgarde Trios, SETs, and Impedance Curves
The Trio is tricky to set up because the impedance curve is very unusual for a horn- high in the bass and low in the highs, due to the design of the crossover, which is mostly capacitors. A lot of SETs have difficulty with the speaker as a result....
Progressive Rock
I use Porcupine Tree's Voyage 34 (the reissue sucks BTW) as a demo at CES and other audio shows that we do (like the recent RMAF). I also demo with ELP's first LP (pink Island edition...), Boards of Canada, Infinity Project (Mystical Experiences) ...
A question regarding "tubes"
Tubes have just as much bandwidth as transistors. The idea that tubes give up bass slam or anything like that is really nothing more than urban legend.
Best AMP for Avalon Eidolon, ARC, CAT, VAC..?
FWIW our customers report that the MA-2s are a nice combination with the Eidelons. In fact something like 95% of all the MA-2s built are running either Sound Labs or Eidelons. Based on this my feeling is that the Avalons are a tube friendly load a...
Trying to extract more from my Vandersteen
One of my employees has NHTs and I've heard Vandys with our gear many times (showed with them once at CES as well...).Vandys are not 'veiled' next to NHTs. Something else is going on, and I have to say if I were you I'd loose the MITs- I've not se...
LS3/5. What do u think ...the best match
Isn't Excel HiFi out of business? Seems to me they went out a few years ago. Are they back? The website isn't- that's for sure.

LS3/5. What do u think ...the best match
I've only heard the combo once, because one of my employees owned a set of LS3/5as. We ran them on our S-30. The speaker is an effortless load (16 ohms) so it is very tube friendly. I remember being quite surprised at how well they did bass. And t...
