new tubes on auto-bias amp,can be done by anyone? short answer: yes. If you have to ship the amp back, doesn't sound like auto bias to me!
Cartridge aging and tip wear symtoms? You can certainly get a lot of cartridges to play for years. But- they won't sound right nor will they track right. So far I don't know of anything that lasts forever, although in terms of recordings, LPs are probably the longest-lived media.
bullet proof amp I short out the speaker terminals while the preamp volume is up all the way as a demo at shows. In addition, I pull tubes out of the amps **while they are playing** and swap them from one channel to the other, with no ill effect or artifact at all...
Tone controls- to use or not? I think the problem here is that the term 'good equalizer' in this day and age is a bit oxymoronic. Back in the old days, Harmon Kardon had a preamp call the Citation One, which employed switched tone controls, i.e. the tone controls were built up...
Cartridge aging and tip wear symtoms? I've viewed many needles under the scope over the years. Rarely did I see one that was actually worn. I did see a few where the stylus had been sheared off of the cantilever... and a lot of dirty styli :) As the cartridge ages, usually whether it ...
tube burnout If your cartridge is not properly loaded, you are missing a bet with LPs. Proper loading can take out a lot of harshness and improve detail. If the cartridge is a few years old, the cantilever suspension can perish (like bad shocks in a car) and t...
Good Time to be a metal fan with a turntable Last time they were in NY was the Therion tour last October/November. Thanks for the tip!
MBL alternatives Sure. They don't have the impact of the T-1 or T-3 (they go down to about 30 Hz), but they do everything else about the same. I don't know if John Wolfe is working on a field coil technology for that model or not.
Tone controls- to use or not? The term 'audiophile' means 'audio lover'. So goof off with it to your heart's desire :)A good number of tone controls, when set to flat, are not in fact flat at all- there is usually some perturbation on account of the controls. In addition, an a...
MBL alternatives That. Looks. Awesome.
tube burnout My experience is that its very difficult to come up with 6DJ8/6922 tubes that do not exhibit some sort of microphonic signature, much more so than tubes that are actually designed for audio, like a 12AT7, 6SN7 or the like. It seems that 6DJ8s are ...
MBL alternatives I run the Classic Audio Reproductions T-3. It is set up with dual 15" woofers, has 20Hz-45KHz bandwidth, nice flat impedance curve, 97 db 1 watt/1 meter and matches the transparency and detail of the best ESLs with its field-coil drivers. Nuance, ...
Good Time to be a metal fan with a turntable In their second album, The Eros of Frigid Beauty, Aesma Daeva single-handedly raised metal to a mature artform. I use the CD for demo at audio shows all the time (track 4) and people always want to know where they can get it. http://www.symphonicm...
tube burnout Years ago Audio Research had a similar problem with the 6DJ8s in the SP-10 (when you tried to use a low output MC cartridge). The tubes would only last about 2 weeks. Higher output cartridges allowed you to run the tubes *a lot* longer. If the 6DJ8...
Balanced Interconnect Cable for ATC Active Monitor We've supported balanced line operation longer than anyone else in high end audio- if you want a good quality inexpensive interconnect that works great with the ATC, Mogami Neglex '4-wire' cable is a great way to go.Balanced line operation was dev... |
