Tube amps have a signature sound
If there is a 'signature sound' it is the low levels of odd-ordered harmonic distortion which our ears are evolved/created to detect. Odd-ordered harmonics are how the ear detects loudness. Tubes make far less of this than transistors. Transistors...
Anyone recommend a neutral tube amp?
Hi Detlof, got it!I play in a couple of bands and I know what you mean there. But as a designer, I do exactly the opposite of what I do in the band. IOW, I try to make the equipment do as little messing with the signal as possible.
A 9 watts beats Passlabs, EAR and YBA ?
Hi, Eldartford, the idea that you can run zero feedback at some audio frequencies and then use feedback at low frequencies suggests to me a gain non-linearity that changes with frequency. So that would take some tinkering to make that work, to say...
Cary 805, deHavilland or Atma-Sphere? Anyone cares
The Magnaplaner 3.6 is not particularly hard to drive, but it is not efficient enough to really work with any amplifier that is limited to say 30 watts or less. The Speltz autoformer is a good combination with larger tube amplifiers and the Maggie...
Damping factor or watts?
Shadorne is pretty much on the money, as are the other posts here. In audio its easy to make a small fortune- start out with a large one :)In this case, buying by the specs (when it is your ears that ultimately matter), is going to flush a lot of ...
The Anatomy of the Acapella Violon - shocking find
Hi David, When you are dealing with 4 ohm speakers and you are running a long cable, first off the resistance of the cable actually becomes part of the total impedance driving the speaker. The second thing to understand is that all speaker cables h...
A 9 watts beats Passlabs, EAR and YBA ?
Hi Eldartford, sure. All amplifiers have what is called Propagation Delay, which is the period of time that it takes a signal to propagate from input to output. This propagation is caused by the risetimes of various internal stages and is not 'the...
Anyone recommend a neutral tube amp?
FWIW the idea that tubes color the sound has the same merit as the idea that transistors color the sound. What colors the sound is anything to do with audio reproduction- IOW it is not a tube/transistor thing...
Question, why do some amps double power from...
Hi Ron, The main thing you want to look at is the idea of constant voltage. For speaker like the Theil, which is a Voltage paradigm device, the amp must also conform to the same paradigm. To do that it *does not* have to double power! The Voltage ...
Cary 805, deHavilland or Atma-Sphere? Anyone cares
FWIW, the deHavilland SETs are some of the very best SETs made in the US. Also, as far as bass is concerned, Atma-Sphere amplifiers are full power to either 1Hz or 2Hz, depending on the model. In either case of SET or smaller OTL, the speaker choic...
Anyone recommend a neutral tube amp?
Eagleman6722, could you clarify what you are trying to say?
Anyone know about making shielded phono leads?
The ground of the tonearm needs to be grounded to the preamp. If you look at your connector box, the RCAs are insulated from ground to prevent a ground loop between the signal and the tone arm ground. Sounds like you missed the connection that com...
Question about Snell B with amps and preamps
We used Snell Bs for a long time. They are best with tube amps, being an easy load and it was easy to demonstrate how much better a tube amp was on the speaker, even in the bass. However they are not very efficient so you need a bit of power- I fo...
Best new loudspeaker
MrTennis, I'm shocked :) are you running a double standard ??!Why can't an amplifier have the same status you just bestowed on the Quad??
