When were the best tube amps made?
Transformers are the key element for both SET and push pull.  Even for OTL the power transformer is relevant.  Likely the best commercial winders were in Japan in the late '90s, companies like HIrata Tango and Tamura. @rogerh113 Excellent power...
Inter Connects - What I know and don't know
@nquery My guess is that it isn't. If you think about a simple audio transformer that has an input and output, and the output is connected to the XLR connection, that transformer only has a winding driving the output and so there are only 2 wires...
New Spatial Audio M4 Ultra
On top of that Clayton is a straight shooter.  Always has been with me!
Is an autoformer (AVC) always superior to pots and resistors ?
Like many things in this hobby, there does not seem to be a clear-cut performance hierarchy between TVCs, AVCs, volume pots, and discrete resistor switches/arrays. You left out active preamps. Its possible to direct couple using tubes to creat...
Tube or solid state
i think Tubes are better for Jazz and Classical music like Vaughn Williams string works where you can recreate that ethereal sound you get with a live symphony. for Rock its solid state all the way, so ideally 2 amps are needed. This might come...
Inter Connects - What I know and don't know
There's an easy way to know. If you run it single-ended into our amps and it plays at a certain volume, does it play louder when running balanced? If yes= does not support the standard if no, volume is the same = supports the standard. This is ...
Inter Connects - What I know and don't know
@69zoso69 If stop gap is the measure then why bother with expensive interconnects till you have everything sorted? I think you will find the Mogami cable to actually be quite good.
Inter Connects - What I know and don't know
@jerryg123 @69zoso69  Our amps support the balanced standard (AES48). To that end, if your preamp does too, then inexpensive studio balanced line cables will work quite well with very little to be said for exotic cables costing quite a lot more! ...
Discuss The Viv Lab Rigid Arm
The hardness of the metal in the bearing is not the only issue. The fineness of the machining is fundamental. @clearthinker  Yes. The bearings in the Triplanar are tiny. The problem you have with any arm with a short arm section is any record...
Audio-grade rectifying diode?
Bypass any rectifier diode with a 0.047uF polypropylene cap and it becomes an audio grade rectifier. This statement is false. The old saw about bypassing rectifiers really doesn't work. The problem is that the rectifier has a capacitance in it...
Discuss The Viv Lab Rigid Arm
I think the slop problem arises because the liquid pivot allows too much movement.  Just a few microns will allow the stylus to change location relative to the platter and read signals that are not imparted by the groove.  I sometimes wonder whet...
Discuss The Viv Lab Rigid Arm
but in a analysis of a variety of designs, there are to be discovered elements in the designs seen that veer away from this. Certainly. I see that as a mistake on their part, nothing more. The physics is inescapable.
Discuss The Viv Lab Rigid Arm
As best I can make out from their website, the Viv breaks a fundamental rule of tonearm design (other than the tracking angle thing). That rule is that there must be profound coupling between the surface of the platter and the mount of the cartri...
Is an autoformer (AVC) always superior to pots and resistors ?
Hi Ralph, Not sure you noticed but the OP was asking about AVCs and not TVCs. I have read that AVCs have wider bandwidth, with less ringing, coloration, and smearing than TVCs. Here is more info about AVCs, and here is a review about an AVC preamp...
Russco cue master Idler rim replacement
Help anyone, I need to find a new one or used that is not out of round to buy,Thank to anyone that replies @uvon60 If you have the old idler, you can send it to Russell Industries and they can rebuild it for a reasonable fee. I've had them do t...
