Who uses high end TT setup for vintage records ?
I've always considered a good turntable setup to be agnostic in regards to source material vintage. That is a very good way of putting it!FWIW, the cutting needles used in cutter heads to make LPs have not changed particularly since the late 1950s.
World's best Pre-amp for $10K and above?
The MPS-5 is the closest I have ever heard to vinyl..the player sounds identical to studio master tape.Sorry- this is complete baloney. Spend some time around some master tapes before saying things like this!

I always knew a lot of the turntables and cartridges are clearly voiced to favour a certain era of music/recordings. But it seems even tonearms have such favouritisms. Lot of these new age tonearms dont play old records with grace.I don't buy this...
the best 'tubey amp - warm,smooth,liquid' ?
Zabiaud, if you really want to find out what tubes can do, you will need to think about getting a different set of speakers that are higher impedance and hopefully a little more efficient!Four ohms sort of works with transistors, but any tube amp ...
TriPlanar Tips
Unoear, thanks but you should not encourage me :)I have been picky about bass for a long time. That is literally the reason why I was trying to find a way to direct-couple tubes to a loudspeaker way back in the mid/late 1970s. I play bass, and hav...
Gain vs. Volume
All the above are correct but may be confusing. A simple way to look at it is to use the least amount of gain that you can to get the job done, as the more gain, the more can go wrong.
Unipivot tonearms less forgiving of Vinyl quality?
A little bit of engineering: The azimuth of the cartridge can have a big effect on its sound- imagine one side having a different amount of contact than the other groove wall, and at a different elevation. You may indeed encounter excess noise if ...
World's best Pre-amp for $10K and above?
Kana813, certainly nothing like what is being claimed in this thread! We have found though that if you want tubes to be quiet, you have to do very similar things that the transistor designers do- fully differential, with excellent regulation and 2...
the best 'tubey amp - warm,smooth,liquid' ?
If you want the system to work well with tubes, the first thing is to sort out if the speaker is OK with that. Take a look at [ur]http://www.atma-sphere.com/Resources/Paradigms_in_Amplifier_Design.php[/url]If your speaker is designed to work with ...

Really? I can't see from the specs or description what sets this preamp apart. Have you heard it? Could you explain more?
rear firing tweeters....
The reason there are rear-firing tweeters has to do with human hearing/perceptual rules. When the ear hears a sound, the brain makes a copy of the sound and then looks for sounds that might be similar. If it finds one, it does a comparison and look...
Is a vinyl rig only worth it for oldies?
Its unfortunate that direct to disk stuff is so rare. Its the King James Version and For Duke disks that are probably the best-known. But they are hard to record! For one thing the musician's can't mess up too bad or a whole side is ruined and the...
Class A amps or Class D??: Which sounds better??
OK, how many of you looked up price/performance curves I mentioned?I don't mind you going off on me, but look at the curves. Class D is about 12-15 years old. Class A is about 80 years old.In terms of technology class A is considered mature, with ...
Is a vinyl rig only worth it for oldies?
Lacee, Low was recording in a studio known locally as 'the Church' because that is what it is... It also has very good acoustics. Low's recordings on Kranky were all done at the Church and have good sound. They sound very laid back, very slow, per...
Class A amps or Class D??: Which sounds better??
I've been playing Upright and Slab Bass professionally since 1965. Playing in the rhythm section means you have the largest gear to deal with. I own and have owned a great deal of instrument amplification over the years. It boils down to having th...
