What speakers for 10k? Well, not all engineers are created equal. From what I read Duke is a pretty good one though.I've said it elsewhere in different terms; one mark of a good engineer is the ability to understand what is negligible and and what is not in a good desig...
Matching a preamp with a different brand ^^ This, plus if possible find out what the output impedance is at 20Hz; is it still fitting into that 10:1 ratio? If so that is very good as bass will not be compromised.
Help Me Choose a Preamp Plan B- find a Dynaco PAS-3 and have it refurbished, possibly modified. With proper mods they can easily take many modern preamps to task.
Cartridge impedance loading question The correct loading for the cartridge is 47K.However, this may result in radio frequency bursts that might disturb the preamp. That is why it is equipped with loading options. The RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) is caused by the excitation of t...
Tannoy Westminster amp matching question. We found that our little amp with 30 watts sounded fine on them but our next amplifier up with 60 watts did the job a whole lot better. I am really of the opinion that the speaker is a lot happier with a little power behind it. Most SETs IMO just ...
Can voltage be mixed with coupling caps? Just be aware that multiple caps can cause smearing of the signal due to differences in the parts. Usually its best just to give it your best shot with a single cap than to make up a value with paralleled parts.
Einstein A fifth option is to have the amplifier updated with a balanced input. Its not that hard (finding a place to put the connector is the hardest part), its cheap to do, does not change the character of the amp, does not use transformers, and does pro...
Skeletal vs Plinth style turntables I tapped the armpod and shelf (plinth) with a metal object whilst the stylus was on a stationary record...and the tone of both was near identical.I was referring to the sound you get not through the speakers but just the sound of the metal itself ...
Amp Re-cap The half life is about 20-25 years, IOW about half of them will be needing replacement after about that time. Low temperatures during operation and frequent use both help extend the life. If in doubt, change the parts.Hum in the amp or preamp can ...
Anything as " fast" as SPECTRAL gear? Is "fast" a desirable attribute?Yes. The human ear/brain system has a tipping point wherein if the reproduction of music is not 'fast' enough, the processing moves from the limbic system (emotional center) to the cerebral cortex (intellectual cent...
Importance of recapping a SS amp? Never heard of this been using power amps for 40 yrs.In that case you are running the amp on borrowed time if its been the same amp that whole time!
Skeletal vs Plinth style turntables Halcro, I can't make out from the photo how that cutting lathe is set up. Our lathe incorporates the platter bearings and the bearing track for the cutter head itself as a single piece of metal (which is quite massive). With regards to the photo o...
Anything as " fast" as SPECTRAL gear? My understanding is that for the most part sonically, slew rate correlates to bass performance and rise time to treble. This is what I've been told by the tech who's worked on some of my amps.Actually slew rate has almost nothing to do with bass, ...
Motorboating after tube change Motorboating is an indication of a power supply problem. My theory is that the different tube somehow was able to do some damage, but it is not obvious how upon looking up the two different tubes. So it could be coincidence, but at any rate you are...
Phono stage matching - how critical Lewm - Minimum should be 1:100 ratio between the two. It is supported by more than one manufacturer.Standard engineering practice is 10:1. |
