KT88 tubes for Monos I've used them in both a Marshall Major and a Citation 2 and they sound great.
12au7 or 12ax7 @wolf_garcia , be careful with those gold-plated tube sockets! Gold is soft and so the socket won't survive many tube changes before the plating fails. When that happens the raw copper beneath is exposed and the socket contacts will turn black.IMO...
Technics Grand Class 1200 SL-GAE Technics knocked this one out of the ballpark. I only wish they had not chosen to make it look like the older SL1200s as people tend to think its the same thing; instead its really much closer to an SP10MkIII.
Looking for speaker ideas. Don't worry about whether the speakers will play rock. Classical is actually just as demanding.Audiokinesis is another good choice- Duke is a master of crossover design (blending the drivers) and getting extended bass impact, all at great prices. ...
12au7 or 12ax7 The 12AX7 is the voltage amplifier in the ampThe 12AU7 is the driver tubeThe 12AX7, being upstream, will have the most sonic merit. The best made were Telefunken but are nearly impossible to find NOS at this point. So if you're rolling tubes, this...

KT88 tubes for Monos JJ has been doing some excellent work on KT-88s recently, in particular this one:https://www.cedist.com/products/kt88-jj-electronics-blue-glass
OTL amplifiers While the ZOTL amps are a brilliant design, they are very much not an OTL, as they employ an output transformer (see Dave Berning's patent).
Tube Guru 6C33C Amp- Has anyone heard this amp?? It looks alright, but I think you will find it underpowered for your speakers (I have T-3s which are the same impedance and efficiency). I assume your room is bigger than mine since you have room for the T-1s. I recommend something with 60 watts i...
Warm Sounding Preamp Suggestions A tube preamp will definitely not be as bright. Brightness is often not a frequency response error as it is caused by trace amounts of higher ordered harmonics. 0.005% can be too much! Tubes tend to make less of the higher ordered harmonics and so...
To Pre or not to Pre? Here is my take ^^ I’m not arguing that point; we don’t use coupling caps at the outputs of our preamps or amps as I previously stated. But most sources use them whether we like it or not.
To Pre or not to Pre? Here is my take ^^ That's pretty unusual (and also explains why a PVC works in your system)! The problem you often run into with direct-coupling is the circuit can have bandwidth that can go lower than the actual power supplies (which always have some sort of time...
To Pre or not to Pre? Here is my take The issue is not what is the output impedance; whether its tube or transistor. The issue is that the output impedance can vary with frequency while not at the same time having flat frequency response into a certain load impedance. IOW the output i...
To Pre or not to Pre? Here is my take Even if there were engineering issues, forty years is more than enough time to solve them. Not to be a curmudgeon, but I suspect most of what is being engineered in wire and linestages are differences marketed to different tastes. This statement i...
New Technics SL 1200 GAE I think it's not easy to mount different tonearm on SL 1200 GAE or SL1200 mk2. It's impossible to mount "12 tonearm and most of the "9 or "10.5 inch tonearms (except maybe jelco, sme, audiomods, dynavector, rega etc) does not fit into position ... |
