What class is my el34 amplifier
If you have to set the bias, the bias current would offer a clue. The input tube complement would offer some information about that as well. Its a pretty good bet that they are class AB1 though.

The Mogami cables are certainly not expensive, but right now, I have no balanced source. I'm not sure what's available for a TT arm that would fit my Music Hall. @jetson All cartridges made today are a balanced source. To operate it balanced, you...
CDs Vs LPs
Do you think that you are hearing aliasing or the phase shift introduced by the brick wall filters, which are there in an attempt to prevent aliasing?I know it was audible in the old days. I've not run a test recently to tell if its still a thin...
Technics Sp10 Mk2 vs SL-1200G - I finally did an A/B
I use two different powerfull step-down stans, one for japanese electronics, another one for american electronics. Absolutely no problem, compared to 220v Technics turntable without step-down transformers.  Just FWIW, you can also do this with...
Good monitor speakers for 300B amps.
Do you  think I can power the ProAc's with a 300B amp. Did you read my last post? It still applies :) The correct answer is 'no' unless you in a small situation, like a desktop.

The reason to go balanced is to avoid the colorations that are common with single-ended cables. How that is possible is that there is a balanced standard which does the job. Your amp supports the standard, not sure about the preamp. But if it does,...
advice for warming up phono sound
Tubes will help. But setup it pretty important. The Oracle mat is far more neutral than cork. What is important about the mat is that it should absorb vibration in the vinyl that results from the stylus tracking the groove. Turn the volume all the ...

Liquid Amps
All this being said...I don’t think the BIGGEST problem with systems not sounding "liquid" is the fault of higher order distortion in SS amps. I don’t think Atmasphere made the claim that it’s the "biggest" problem either, so we may not even disag...
Pre and Amp Suggestions
For the amps I would do Pass Labs. For the preamp I would go with tubes- that is if you want to reduce that 'leanness' which is a common complaint with solid state. We make balanced tube preamps, so does BAT, ARC and Aesthetix and there are a few ot...
Good carts with SME V
I had good luck with the SME5 and the Micro Benz cartridges, but that was a while ago. The Micro Benz was a trooper though- the cantilever suspension held up for over 10 years.
Valve phono stage
@infection I mentioned earlier about how you can't just buy tubes off the shelf and expect them to work in a high performance circuit.Lew's advice is good- those tubes are in there for a reason. This isn't saying that you can't do better- you can,...
Good monitor speakers for 300B amps.
The problem is you need efficiency to really hear what the amp can do. With any SET, your normal high volume listening level should not exceed about 20-25% of full power that the amp makes, due to the excess distortion that will occur. The distort...
What is the best HEAVY METAL speaker?
But, typically I find that Rock/Metal guys like myself are looking for a huge soundstage, and that "live" sound. Maybe not the best imaging. But damn, it's like being at a concert.Huge soundstage is a sign of a good speaker with good resolutio...
Valve phono stage
Still have some amazing NOS tubes left, such as ECC801 / 12AT7 WA, not sure is there is any valve phono stage with this type of tubes. We use 12AT7s in all our phono sections. Not as much gain as a 12AX7, but a lot more bandwidth.
