Have Passive Preamps Finally Come of Age?
Because 90% of systems are a great match for passives, and are the most dynamic /transparent way of getting the source to the amp except for going direct if you can do it without "bit stripping". While the first half of this is false, I do agree...
Impedance Matching Question
A line transformer can be used. IME, not an elegant option, but it works. You are better off with a preamp that can drive the amp properly.
Where do I go from here?
possibly 3-channel to pick up the center. If you want proper 3D soundstage, I'd stay away from a center channel unless its a dialogue channel for the home theater; even then they can be marginal...If you want more 3D, tubes are something to try.
joule electra vs. atma-sphere any input?
@brunomarsThe advantage of going balanced is that if it is done right, the interconnect cables won't play a big role in the sound of the system. If you've ever had to audition cables to get the right sound, you know what I mean.
Have Passive Preamps Finally Come of Age?
Its an active (buffered) control. Shouldn't this thread have a different title?"What could be better? Hardly any noise or distortion added by these simple passive parts. No feedback, no worrying about what type of capacitors – just musical perfe...
How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp?
all I could find on the Baxandall was math and schematics. What good is that?Pretty good if you want one and no-one sells one. You just have to find someone to make it. We can do stuff like that, but as a one-off it might not look at that great.I...
Technics Sp10 Mk2 vs SL-1200G - I finally did an A/B
I missed part of that.OK- one of the strengths of the SL1200G is a properly designed plinth! If you mount the arm separately so that its not coupled to the plinth, a coloration will occur. The only real way to ascertain what is the arm and what is ...
Cartridge Loading- Low output M/C
"Magnetic cartridges are the only cartridges that might be affected by cable capacitance. With moving coil cartridges, cable capacitance is not a concern." Is the above a true statement? No. It is advantageous to keep the resonant frequency as high...
Cartridge Loading- Low output M/C
^^ Sounds like it to me :)
Technics Sp10 Mk2 vs SL-1200G - I finally did an A/B
@pani Did I miss your answer to my question?
Cartridge Loading- Low output M/C
Between 475 and 100,000 ohms I must confess that the differences I think I hear in the music are so small they may be imagined. Is this to be expected or should I run immediately to a good Otolarygologist?About 30 years ago I worked on developin...
Preamps better than Parasound JC-2 ?
I have never had any experience with tubes. So never investigated into tubes. I am worried that when a tube goes bad, it might cause some damage to the system. Besides tube rolling is expensive and I have no experience biasing the tubes. What ar...
Getting into Tube Equipment
Given you keep active on this site, it surprises me to hear that. It’s become the preponderant current criticism. Someone just made that statement here on Audiogon in the past week.Just because other people say it doesn't make it true. I've hear...
Getting into Tube Equipment
Folks historically dismissed the Dynaco with its slow, syrupy, pipe and slippers sound that represented the typical products of the time after hearing the reinterpretations; most of it came down to a case of comparing apples and oranges. The ne...
Cartridge Loading- Low output M/C
This may not be an issue, but it would seem to me that when using a high resistive load an input amp with either a very high overload margin or a deliberately limited bandwidth (<<2.5MHz) would be essential. Once again, preamp architectur...
