The ups and downs of tube vs. SS...
I was wondering about a tubed buffer stage between source and amp? If one was to go with either SS, or tubes, will it make a huge difference? Or, is it just a waste of money? If you don't need the gain a tube buffer is a good idea. You will loose s...
The ups and downs of tube vs. SS...
My favorite is a Fisher 500C unrestored. That won't last long if the filter capacitors don't get replaced. As they fail, they tend to take the power transformer with them. It can get pretty ugly as the transformer might leak nastiness when it gets...

I drive some very inefficient electrostats that have impedance curves that drop to 1 ohm with big class A power amps. You might be surprised to find that tube amps can manage a load like that. IME many people think ESLs are inefficient and difficul...
Balanced cables
Actually EEs are not that rare in the recording world. There also those that are entirely by gosh and by golly. But like any field, they also attend the school of hard knocks. So its unwise to assume that without an education that they also don't ...
Balanced cables
I must also add I have tried the ground cable from T/T on Pre-Amp, when using standalone Phono. So if Cheater Plug works what is the procedure then?An isolation power transformer might be used so as to isolate the grounds. Or you could send it bac...

RCA vs Phono cable
How does low capacitance effect sound quality?OK- this is a bit technical, but the cartridge employs a coil and so has a property of coils called 'inductance'. Interconnect cables have 'capacitance'; when the two are in parallel as in this case, t...
Brand new to vinyl: Help!
I am thinking I should be able to save about $2,000 to $4,000 for a good turntable in about six months.@thyname If that is the case, I recommend the Technics SL-1200G. It looks identical to the old SL1200s you see on Craigslist, but its an entirel...
noisy tube preamp
Also something that I may have misrepresented is that the buzz (not the high frequency pitch) i hear is intermittent and comes on every few minutes until the pre warms up so it's not a constant thing. That is consistent with a possible bad tube.
Balanced cables
I get buzzing if I use 2 sets of RCA cables with my standalone Phono stage. i.e. if I run RCA's from turntable into Phono and then I run RCA's into PreAmp I get buzzing. If I run Phono direct to Power Amps (phono has vol. control), no buzzing....
noisy tube preamp
@lukaszwk You might try TubeDepot.com I don't know of anyone selling tubes in Chicago, but I'm sure they are there.I would not regard the age of the preamp as having anything to do with tube condition! Who knows if the tubes were any good when the...
RCA vs Phono cable
Usually a phono cable has low capacitance per foot as opposed to other audio cables...
noisy tube preamp
Also as far as voltage gain from the pre, I'm pretty sure that is also the issue, I have never dared to play it louder than maybe 11 o'clock position on the volume potentiometer because it's starting to clip a 300 watt amp so the in line attenu...
Who Makes Class AB, DC design
You don't need an AB design; class A amps drive Maggies just fine although they make more heat. Class D can do the job too and in all cases I recommend audition. You also don't need a 'high current' amp- what you need is an amp that can make enough...
