Reel to Reel and General Tapes Questions
I was figuring the Otari would be better then home units, I might sell the Pioneer after I get the Otari up to snuff. How would you rate the sound of the sony vs the Otari? My thoughts on the VCR audio heads were that they are newer than reel t...
Technics SL-1200G Mat Recommendations
Its tricky! The problem is that the spindle height on the Technics is rather short, so many platter pads mean that you can only use a record weight rather than a clamp. We've used the Oracle pad with good results.
Tube Question
6SL7s made in Russian often have leakage problems (this is a test on a tube tester) which can introduce hum. We've had such troubles with Russian-made 6SN7s (which are similar but less gain) that we've had to recommend on our website to simply not...
Should I eliminate my preamp?
I do have a question regarding passives . The pot used in the SM Pro Nano patch I use I assume costs a few bucks . Would say a Alps volume pot have a different sound ? I would assume all passives should have a similar sound . Is there a way to alt...
Phono Preamps with "balls" ?
As I said the problem is not in the phono stage ( I mean the main problem. ) but the huge differences that exist in both proccess: recording and play where digital is way way different to how things goes with analog where almost all " thousand...
Phono Preamps with "balls" ?
A CD with a top DAC ( 32bits/384 khz.) and good overall design outperforms any phono stage it does not matters the phono stage price/pedigree ( including yours. ) in the bass " management " and this is not because your unit or other units are n...
I'd like to hear recommendations for Turntables under $5,000
The SL-1200G is an excellent table, and if your budget is 'under $5000' but not including an arm, its possible to mount different arms on the SL 1200. We've mounted 12" Triplanar arms on the SL 1200G with excellent results. IMO the platter pad and...
Impedance matching with tube amp
Anyone designing a preamp with a 100K ohms output impedance is in the wrong business...And none exist, except for passives.and 600 ohms for the input of the Sphinx is, if correct, by far the lowest I have ever seen in a power amp.We make a tube pr...
Should I eliminate my preamp?
What Ralph mentioned about coupling caps above is not relevant these days, as nearly all solid state sources have been direct-coupled for years,This statement is false, on account of the fact that a lot of solid state equipment does use coupling...
Tube amps and heat
To all the fan proponents, it’s a no go.  AZ summers peak at up to 120 day time and stay 95 overnight. A/C systems run almost continuously. If one room generates much more heat than others which requires the thermostat to be turned down, then y...
Manley snapper vs Atma-sphere M60
The choice of music isn't going to make any difference - the amps and speakers really don't care about that, and there really isn't any way to design an amplifier to play rock better than classical or vice versa. Now bandwidth of the amplifiers mi...
Phono Preamps with "balls" ?
I've yet to hear a CD that plays better bass than my phono section...I like to run balanced, as all phono cartridges are balanced sources, and that can reduce or eliminate the 'sound' that the tone arm cable might otherwise impart.
Should I eliminate my preamp?
"I can give you the maths if you want."An offer that is hard to refuse, if not too complicated for my pay grade... Here is some additional math:With a 10K pot in series with the output coupling cap, a timing constant is introduced. The formula for ...
Tube amps and heat
There is a simple inexpensive solution for amps that make heat, which is to vent air above them out of the room. IOW you don't have to run your air conditioning to stay comfortable on account of the amp. For the small price of some dryer ducting a...
Should I eliminate my preamp?
Any preamp will add frequency response anomalies and distortion. You may prefer that sound to the unmodified signal, but it is good to be honest (as most of the posters in this thread have been) about what is actually going on. One of the most...
