Have Passive Preamps Finally Come of Age?
If the passive has a 10K impedance maximum George's statement is true. Apparently not all Lightspeed controls have such a low impedance; we had one here that was much higher. So the model you get can have a big effect. Also, 300pf is a low value e...
Aesthetic preamp
If you are looking for a preamp that has XLR inputs and outputs, you might want to know that many products in high end audio, even though they have balanced XLR connections, don’t actually support the balanced standard. This is true of both the ARC...
Have Passive Preamps Finally Come of Age?
Hence the statement I quoted above appears to me to be incorrect, and George’s statement that "interconnects are the determining factor here" is likely to be correct.@almarg This seems to me a bit of a catch-22, as the very high impedance of the...
Considering tube Monos to replace SS
@crazyeddy (whose moniker smacks of A Mote in God's Eye, which I read about 40 years ago...)The Wilsons have always been easy to drive with tubes, which is why ARC and others have often showed with Wilsons at shows. The Maxxes are no exception des...
Backert Labs Rhumba preamp
@sbank Thanks- I often wonder what people mean when they use the word 'voice' in that manner. I've often interpreted as some sort of tonality? - but it could mean something else. FWIW we don't do anything to compensate our circuits for bandwidth, ...
Do ClassDAudio Amps Have Proper Decay Of Notes?
hence the amp itself gets the moniker "digital" amp and "class D" is conflated with "digital" when in fact the amplification itself an analog process controlled by digital microcontrollers. Our class D amp does not use any digital circuits or mi...
Backert Labs Rhumba preamp
The MP3 may be really good, but is currently out of my price range and also comfort (no. of tubes) range. @milpai The Rhumba is a line stage. If you get the MP-3 as a line stage, it only has 4 tubes. The remaining tubes you are probably thinking a...
Help me pick a phono, pre and cart
@bpoletti It has to, Ohm's Law and such. How much it does so is not as well researched, but I've seen a good number of audiophiles do loading by ear- essentially dialing out brightness by using a potentiometer as the loading resistor and when they ...
Help me pick a phono, pre and cart
The one thing I have learned is that you'll want a phono stage that is highly adjustable if you want to use a moving coil cartridge. Loading can make the difference in SQ. I was interested in the Ayre phono stage as well but it did not have the...
MAC Autoformers?
I believe he meant that with an autoformer an amp can be designed with lax’ed parameters eg: that make it stable. And that an autoformer can then isolate it from the bad outside world speaker emf etc, that may make it go into oscillation or rin...
Backert Labs Rhumba preamp
The hum you read about was not inherent in the preamp, but was caused by the higher output impedance of the preamp combined with poor interconnect cable layout between the preamp and amp. Once the guy on the stevehoffman site got the layout right,...
Have Passive Preamps Finally Come of Age?
If a power amp has an input sensitivity of say 1v input to make it reach full wattage output (eg: clipping) There is no need for the preceding stage (whether it be a preamp or direct from the source) to put out any more than say 2v so long as i...
Phono stage can minimize tics and pops on vinyl
I've not used my Discwasher in 20 years. I don't need it- a simple dust brush is all I use and that is to prevent dust buildup on the stylus. IOW I'm playing LPs free of ticks and pops with no need to clean them.
Have cartridges been known to fail (Grado)?
Yes, just to be clear I would be very suspicious that something other than the cartridges is up.
MAC Autoformers?
Why hinder the performance of a well designed solid state amp with an autoformer, unless it was a bad designed one to start with. A simple test is to put a well known Auto Former that’s used on OLT’s to make them "sort of work" into speakers th...
