Why the fascination with subwoofers?
Seems to me that because the recording of LP’s during the cutting proccess the bass information must goes in MONO due to the analog/LP limitations the producers/engeneers accustom to never think to make CD recordings taking advantage of the dig...
Replacing my MFA Luminescence B2 preamp
I have read/heard from several sources that the Jadis JP-80 was a class above the rest.I heard that preamp at Harry Pearson’s house driving our MA-2s on a set of Pipedreams. It was a nice preamp, but IME not really in a different class. It did sup...
3 great tube preamps. Which would you purchase?
Forget about balanced outputs.  If they were meaningful, Don would design his preamp for them, but he feels RCA outputs are perfectly fine.If you hear balanced line done right, there simply isn't any going back to single-ended. More detail, black...
Tubes or stick with S/S
A whole new world awaits- you'll be going through your recording collection hearing things you never knew existed in them.
Why the fascination with subwoofers?
@rauliruegas When I make comments regarding the sound or effectiveness of a thing in audio, if they are subjective in nature I use recordings that I made since I was there at the recording session and know how they are supposed to sound. I had the...
Why the fascination with subwoofers?
^^ I suggest you make a recording with very low bass on it and see. I find that the most useful way to have a true reference.
The under appreciated impedance curve
Anytime I get asked about the suitability of a speaker with our gear I always look for the impedance curve. All amplifiers make more distortion into lower impedances so I look for that sort of thing- it can be pretty detrimental in the bass where ...
Why the fascination with subwoofers?
For a 10" woofer ( as the four subs array posted here. ) is almost imposible to handled frequencies below 20hz at over 100dbs ( SPL. ) and with low THD kind of distortion. This statement is false. The Swarm takes advantage of room boundary effects...
Replacing my MFA Luminescence B2 preamp
@ledoux1238 OK- keep in mind the comparisons won't be fair if your preamp doesn't have the benefit of a properly running power supply.
3 great tube preamps. Which would you purchase?
@jred You might check and see if any of the balanced preamps support AES48 which is the balanced standard. If they do you will get the benefits of balanced operation- immunity to cables, longer distances possible, lower noise even in short runs an...
Replacement Amp For Audio Research Classic 60
The ProAc 2.5s work very nicely with our M-60s (which have balanced inputs). So there are lots of tube amps that would do the job. FWIW that's pretty cramped to fit any amp tube or solid state in a rack space like that without a fan.
Is it possible to have vinyl nearly noise free?
Can you recommend some stand-alone phono stages that have the design features you describe? Don’t think I’m smart enough to figure that out for myself, but it would be interesting to give one a try. Thanks!I know Nelson Pass makes a stable phono...
Why the fascination with subwoofers?
Can someone define for me what "tight" bass is. An artifact of sound reproduction. It does not seem to occur in real life. Punch but no detail, in a nutshell. To address Raul's attacks against me: I don't sell speakers of any sort. I recently moved...
Is it possible to have vinyl nearly noise free?
Atmasphere, I have never heard a phono stage make tics and pops. I would think that ultrasonic ringing would cause steady state distortion/overload if the unit’s frequency response went that high. Granted my experience with multiple inexpensive ph...
Why the fascination with subwoofers?
Do you have to play a mono (i.e., summed) signal from all the subs or would there be value to trying the front subs in stereo and the rear subs or one rear sub in mono to better deal with standing waves?I'd put the side subs in mono. That's the ...
