Tube Amp lower power vs higher power and cruising volume
The David Berning stuff is wonderful. I am not sure if these designs are as adverse to lower impedance speakers as other OTL designs seem. The Berning ZOTL amps are not OTLs by any stretch (read the patent), although a brilliant design nontheless....
Best modern 6550 tube for ARC per-amp
In any single-ended product the quality of the regulator is certainly quite audible! And while the signal does not go through it, the regulator has to have good linearity just like any power amplifier- and that is exactly what it is. So you want t...
High end Class D amps?
Problems with any amps shouldn’t be fixed by using even more feedback as a fix, it’s a added by the best designers to clean thing up a little and usually just local not global in an already well designed amp. All the greatest amp designers say it....
High end Class D amps?
How many class D do I have to listen to? Is there a The class D which disproves the "myth"? Did I just happen to miss the good ones? Here are some tips. The first thing is avoid amps using switch mode power supplies. The reason for this isn't that...
Control volume with DAC or Preamp?
If you look at the graph George posted, be sure to observe the vertical scale as it is in fractions of a dB. -0.8dB down is not bad for a transformer coupled unit. However it should be noted that output transformers need to be loaded properly for ...
Control volume with DAC or Preamp?
I’m not sure that one could accurately describe the OP’s direct from DAC to amp application as “passive”?@unsound Check my original post in this thread.
Control volume with DAC or Preamp?
Ralph is product (his active preamp) protection mode, omitting the reason behind a "why" the "rare" times a passive "may not" be the least coloured, least distorted, and best dynamicallyThe reason passive controls tend to sound more colored is t...
High end Class D amps?
George is correct. Lack of switching bandwidth is the problem. I know Bruno Putzeys claimed differently in an old interview, but he's mostly a self-promotor so no one should take what he says as gospel truth. For the record, Bruno Putzeys is the ...
Tube Amp lower power vs higher power and cruising volume
Usually in tube amps (with output transformers) the smaller amps are the better sounding, usually on account of the output transformer, but also in how the power tubes are driven by the driver circuit (by far the lessor variable). If you don't ove...
High end Class D amps?
The answer is simple: Gain knowledge instead of made up stories. These are words of someone either in denial or in product protection mode.George, as a simple tip: the ability to admit that you were wrong is a strength, not a weakness. In my quot...
High end Class D amps?
How can anyone believe that "any" Class-D driving a pair of Wilson Alexia etc etc could possibly do anywhere near the sonic job that an amp like Gryphon Antllion or similar could do. Especially in the lower bass where the Alexia's are 0.9ohm loa...
High end Class D amps?
Now you go find a Class-D that will keep pushing even more current into that kind of loading like a good bi-polar amp can.You mean like, *most* class D amps?? Because its most of them.@jaytor  I've found that dealing with George means you have to ...
High end Class D amps?
Class-D semiconductor devices operate in saturation and would not be impacted by this. That, and the fact that the amp has an output impedance of a handful of milliohms. Phase angle isn't going to affect it.
Control volume with DAC or Preamp?
George is omitting the rest of Nelson's comments when he makes that quote. He seems to do this as part of his 'product protection' program, since he sells (actually a very good, but also obviously not of his own design) passive volume control. Her...
Class A triode - on/off on remote?
There's really no point. Other things in the system have to be turned on too. The preamp has to be first. So no point in using a remote. If a preamp has it, its only because they could implement it, not because its actually practical.
