No more "High End" for me...Back to Reality Audio
Even had another powers urge last Saturday and this time I was home. A power surge should never knock out anything more than a fuse. If the equipment was off at the time, its more likely it was a lightning strike on the AC line, which can take ...
Is rectifier tube arcing a problem?
A 5U4 should handle that load just fine. I think you've had bad luck with tubes... Is this happening in both channels? Do both channels sound the same?
Indicators of worn/bad capacitors?
visual clues include swelling, discharge of any substance at the base of the capacitor, heat discolouration and general old age (although old caps can still function OK). This is only if the capacitor is heating up. If the cap isn't heating abo...
Is rectifier tube arcing a problem?
@gte357s  One thing that can cause rectifier tubes to arc is too much capacitance at the input of the power supply. What amp are you using? I've seen a lot more arcing failure with Russian made rectifier tubes. Depending on the amp you may have ...
MAT - platter material, thickness/ resonant frequency - thoughts please
@lohanimal Acrylic can be variable in hardness. Oracle makes an acrylic platter pad that is really close to the hardness of vinyl and not surprisingly, works quite well.
MAT - platter material, thickness/ resonant frequency - thoughts please
A platter pad needs to do two things: control resonance in the LP and minimize resonance in the platter. To do the former the mat has to be the same hardness durometer as the LP so all frequencies are absorbed by the mat. If the mat it too soft o...
Do high end manufacturers need retail outlets?
I have to wonder how much of the "high end" even needs audiophiles.  So much of it has gone to installers catering to the uber wealthy. @erik_squires Installers? This is news to me. Installers usually work with mid-fi stuff IME.
What made you change to a 6SN7 preamp?
I think you were reinforcing the point I was trying to make that it's not all about the tube?  That is true. But if you work with tubes over time, you get a feel for what they do. More to the point though that in order to really compare what th...
What made you change to a 6SN7 preamp?
I was immediately struck by how much quieter it was, how much detail it had, and how it presented as good or better of a soundstage and had very precise imaging.  It would be lovely if we could attribute the characteristics above to a particula...
Linlai E 6sn7 tubes
Examples of this tube that we have tried have been excellent. My exposure to this tube is recent; I'm interested to see how well they hold up- if they are good in this department then they are good deal at their price.
What made you change to a 6SN7 preamp?
In building preamp amplifiers, the 6SN7 based tube in general is a warmer sound, more relaxed presentation, more dimensional soundstage with real mid-range beauty.  That being said, the 6DJ8/6922 is generally more dynamic, faster, better clarity,...
The Best Preamp is no Preamp?
That means the pre does change the original music signal into slightly different signal. The modified signal would be good to our ears. Do not praise the preamp that makes poor source better. Just blame the poor source. If you have good source (w...
AGD Tempo in the house
Technics and Lyndorf to name a few are digital. Even the manufacturer states this. Erroneously so, yes. What I've seen on the Technics site looks like it was written by the marketing department.
AGD Tempo in the house
@ron1264 All class D amps are analog. If its digital, its not class D. FWIW the on and off states in a digital word have significance whereas the on and off states of a class D do not. So I doubt there is any such thing as a 'digital amplifier'; t...
AGD Tempo in the house
I have had multiple Class D amps that sound cold and unnatural fresh out of the box and warm over time.  I also have had some that have never improved and sound cold and unnatural forever.  Of course, I can think of some Class AB and A amps that ...
