McIntosh and Thiels
Some ideas:1. How much power does the Mac produce? The 2.3's need at least 100wpc to really shine, and more is better.2. Got a decent power cord on the Mac? 10 gauge or wider is important. 3. Are the 2.3's broken in? My 2.3's had no bass at all fo...
Plinius warm-up
All amps seem to benefit from warmup but my 8200 Mk II does in particular. I leave it on all the time. Also a 10 gauge power cord is important. I got great results, although differing results, from Kimber, Shunyata and Cardas power cords.Art
I recently emailed John Atkinson of Stereophile
I have pretty good experience with the Stereophile reviews except that I find them to be somewhat quality inflated, as some of you suggest. Still, the comments in the reviews are useful and also the rankings are useful, IMO. Sometimes they are fla...
BAT VK-75SE has fat bass & very soft treble
Is that 87db at 2.83mv or 1mv? Subtact 3db if the former. How stable is the impedence curve and how low does it dip?Art
Comparing pre amps and the upgrade dilema
Sometimes I end up purchasing a piece that I used to own, because I miss it. Accept that this will happen sometimes. I'm on my second thiel 04a, have owned 2 AI M3a's, and after owning CJ 11a and Premier 12's and selling both over the past few yea...
Thiel 1.6 - bass
Well, here's an update: I am getting nice low frequencies with my 1.6's now. Some changes in cabling, power strip amp and preamp did it. Oh yeah, positioning too. Nonetheless, I'll keep watching for a REL Strata to show up used. This might be toug...
Advice on Totem model ones
Rbstehno hit the nail on the head. Power. Many of us have discovered the hard way that there is a difference between power a speaker sufficient to get the volume you want and powering a speaker in a manner that it produces robust, well balanced so...
Help: Thiel CS6 vs CS 2.3
Check out the 2.4 if you are looking for that size speaker.CS6 and 2.3/2.4 are very different sizes. 6 needs a lot more current but goes way deeper in the bass. 2.3 and 2.4 are way newer designs, probably more coherent, but when push comes to shov...
Thiel Powerplane and Powerpoint Speakers
At CES the Thiel home theatre setup used just Powerpoints (I think) and their sub, and it was awesome. This is a worthy direction if you can pull it off. As always, be careful of mating Thiels with inexpensive lean sounding solid state gear. If yo...
Integrated Amp advice please someone help me
Contact me regarding my LFD Mistral SE integrated. It's $1500 new, I'm going to post it for $750 used in a couple of weeks when I return from travel. It's liquid, sweet, easily competes with some $3000 integrateds. I think only the Musical Fidelit...
Review: Plinius 8200 Amplifier
I experienced some graininess and loose bass but this has gone away with long breakin of both speakers (Thiel 1.6) and amp (8200 mkII). I'm very happy with this combination right now.
Speakers that sound like Thiels on steroids.
Thiel 2.4 ! Heard them at CES. I think they are a serious increment over the 2.3, might be just what you are looking for.Another idea are the floor standing Joseph Audios, esp 33i SE ($11k ulp)
New Meadowlark Kestral 2: Was at CES--Opinions??
Driven by Rogue integrated amp, it was awesome. It looks great (like a slightly larger swift) and it sounded great too.
Analysis Plus Spker Cable Excellent Cable or Hype?
I love them. They were, however, beaten by the (far more expensive) Cardas Golden Cross in my system. I prefer the AP Oval 9 copper over the AP 12 gauge silver hybrid in the systems I've tried them with. Oval 9 is very natural, rich, with deep bas...
Bryston vs. Plinius
It depends on the speaker you are matching with. If the speaker is forgiving, warm, natural sound, the Plinius might be over the top. If the speaker is neutral, fast, lean, detailed, the Plinius might add a welcome touch of music.
