integrated suggestions
My Cary SLI-80 is awesome, and so flexible (Ultralinear or triode, EL34 or 6550/KT88, 4 or 8 ohms...). Highly recommended. (mine is NOT for sale)Art
tube or tube-like amp recommendations?
Well..... you could get a nice tube integrated... or tube preamp and save your money for a tube amp.... There is some quite good sounding solid state out there but I've always ended up having to go back to tubes for a lifelike presence of music an...
Energy Veritas 2.1 sound too lean
Tunes4me is exactly right on the breakin process - 12 or 24 hours of that breakin process has given me amazing results. But he forgot to mention that you need, for best results, a mono recording or a mono switch on your amp or source. And, be CARE...
Anyone in Vegas listen to the Gilmore speakers???
I thought the Gilmore's looked great and sounded great. My two audiophile buddies did not like the sound as much as I did, and I did not ask their opinion of the look. As best I can assess, these speakers evoke widely varying opinions.
I need information on the AR-ES-1 turntable, how
There used to be a company in Tenn with the name Merrill in the title, that offered service, parts, upgrades and advice on AR turntables. The closest I can find now is http://www.merrillaudio.com/, and, this really might be them. (It's too early i...
Ever gone from seperates to an integrated?
I went from CJ Premier 12's and LS17 to integrated. Tried several solid state integrated, now the Cary SLI-80. I think I'm settling in on this, or perhaps an SET integrated, but it's definitely missing something compared to my separates system. Yo...
Las Vegas "THE" alternative show?
It was a nice combination, CES plus THE show. Was able to cover it all in two days, albeit at a slightly frantic pace.Art
Personal amp evolution
Amber Series 70, Adcom 545 (succumbed to hype alas), Bryston 2B, Forte 4a, Golden Tube SE100 briefly, Conrad Johnson 11a (VERY nice!), Conrad Johnson 12 monoblocks (WOW). Then tried to downsize: MD 208 receiver, Audio Analogue Puccini (nice), LFD ...
Silverline La Folia Speakers
Alan loves to play his amps with Pass X amps, and they do sound great that way. I prefer low powered tubes myself.... Nice thing about most of his speakers is that you can do both! Not sure about the Folia...
Manley NeoClassic 250 Monoblocks
I've heard these several times at shows and been extremely impressed, they seem very powerful and musical, a rare combination.
Do old Fisher tube amps compare to modern ones?
I've been using the Fisher 400 off and on since my uncle's brand new one in the mid '60's, and the one I have now was refurbished by The Fisher Doctor. It has real classic tube sound: lovely, lifelike overall, more so than transistor, but somewhat ...
Thiel CS1.6 vs Sonus Faber Grand Piano - $5k budgt
Thiel bass drivers need a LOT of break-in, and you need good power and proper cabling to produce that bass. When you get it, it's awesome, very very clean and quick. The 1.6 could probably benefit from a sub, but under proper conditions in a small...
Phono preamp advice.
If you have a low to medium powered MC cartridge, you should snap up a used Sonic Frontiers Phono One. One showed up on the net in the past few days. They were $2000 list, class A rated in Stereophile, powerful and very clean and lovely sounding t...
Consumer Electronics Show,8-12 Jan. 2004 Las Vegas
It has more of an industry orientation than the Stereophile show, but is still wonderful. Definitely check out the competing "THE" show at the San Remo when you are there.
Theil's 2.4 - who out there has heard them?
Awesome, but they have a long break-in and require very careful system matching.
