Review: Audio Analogue Puccini Settanta Amplifier
Digression: A good friend of mine has an older Puccini that needs repair on one channel. Got any recommendations? He's in San Francisco Bay Area, but of course can ship if there is especially good reason to.Thanks,Art
Great -Small- Cheap subwoofer ?
I vote REL. With the high pass input, and careful placement, they integrate perfectly with the main speakers. Sounds like you don't have a sub - rather, like your main speakers just got a whole lot better.Art
Cary SLI80 vs CAry SEI300B
Hey Dave, yeah, well, the triode mode of my SLI-80 is definitely sweeter than the ultralinear mode, and more liquid and present and realistic than most amps - certainly all the solid state ones I've tried. I think that the SLI-80 amp sounds and lo...
Rank Stereophile, & why no Von Schweikert reviews
System balance and goals are crucial, as lightminer suggests. Heck I've got a $20 clock radio that sounds really nice - it just does not attempt to reproduce any sound out of it's natural narrow band in the midrange. As far as reviews being never ...
Importance of Center Channel in small room
Yep, I'm thinking about these comments and others on avforum, videoasylum that I found after searching.... and some personal experiences too. I figure that center is optional in a small room unless you want to have the gang over. Center is not rea...
Rank Stereophile, & why no Von Schweikert reviews
Spencer, I find that link easily but then I find myself wading through a list of advertisements and "coming reviews" and after screen after screen of that stuff I just give up. Have you any rules of thumb for actually finding the reviews instead o...
Rank Stereophile, & why no Von Schweikert reviews
Hey Larry, I can't believe I just noticed this thread. Let me first say - LSA-1's are awesome! Seriously, they are particularly musical, I don't know how you do it. They are one of the few elements of my systems that I never consider "rotating" ou...
Why the small "letterbox"
Thanks for the responses. I'll make sure the firmware is up to date. The folks at Oppo got back to me (great responsiveness via email or phone BTW) and said that yeah some older DVDs that are not anamorphic will do that, it's unfortunate but norma...
? about oppo
My 970h sounded really good, very very enjoyable, but it was no match for my $3000 Cary cdp. The Cary had way more authority, larger soundstage, and a more saturated sound.I traded up to the 980 to get 1080p upconversion for my new Panasonic plasm...
Heifetz' Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Classic Rec
I own two LP copies: a glorious original with a few ticks and pops, and a somewhat compressed '70's reissue. Both defninitely distort on orchestral climaxes. I've always assumed that it was inherent in the recording. The sound of the violin itself...
OPPO 980 h dvd mod?
My Oppo 980 is outstanding in reproducing cds via it's analogue outputs into my high end stereo - Cary SLI-80, Silverline Sonatina II's, etc. It's a very enjoyable sound. Personally whenever I've tried going without a preamp or using passive volum...
Any new reviews on the Oppo 983?
I just ordered a 983 for it's list price of $400. Maybe crazy, we'll see. They are back ordered so should hold their value for a while. I got in the queue some weeks ago but that was before the reviews hit. Reviews for the 983 are spectacular. My p...
OPPO 980 h dvd mod?
Kal, the most recent column that I see on that Stereophile site is March 2008. I guess we'll need to wait in suspense?Art
OPPO 980 h dvd mod?
For those of you that love the 980 sound - did you use it straight out of the box, analog stereo into your audiophile system? Or did you make any changes to the settings prior to using it? ThxArt
OPPO 980 h dvd mod?
QUESTION: In order to benefit from the 980's excellent sound quality, do you need to use the analogue outs? That is, if I use the 980 in my HT where I use optical out to the A/V receiver (not hdmi), would I really benefit from the 980s sonic improv...
