Your First System
1999, I was 21, Eosone RSF-600 speakers, Aiwa A/V receiver and Aiwa CD changer. Boy those were fun days. My first upgrade over a boombox. Got an Audio Alchemy preamp and amp and Adcom DAC in early 2001. I got to learn what a SOUNDSTAGE was. Holy s...
Trying a turntable-it sounds crappy, what's up??
meant to say that I *almost* threw away the three records that I first bought. Never fear. I still have those three records and piles and pile more since then. :-)
Trying a turntable-it sounds crappy, what's up??
I initially had a dual TT (some arm) and a grado black cart with hagerman phono. I was not impressed with vinyl at all. I also threw away the three records that had tempted giving up vinyl altogether. Then we got a thorens 166 with grado black, th...
Budget tuner?
I'd get one of the early ca.1980 solid state tuners off of ebay. Something like my sansui I got off of ebay for $7. On the right jazz broadcast, it betters my redbook front end. If FM is really, really good in your area, you might strong for one o...
Newbi seeking advise - why tubed pre-amp?
it get you the "tube sound" without the expense of a tube power amp. Tube amps tend to be expensive (even more so for powerful ones). Plus the power output tubes in a tube amp wear out more often and cost more than line level tubes. Hence the appe...
Trying to locate Metallica's "Vinyl Box" set
I found this one when I was surfing around yesterday.. Standard disclaimer: I'm not affiliatedwith the seller, or the website, or metallica, or he pressing factory, etc.Everyone else seems to be out of stock. I have seem some on eBay, of course. $...
Looking for Bass....
The others are right. You can get lots of satisfying bass out of maggies, even the 1.6. I have to make sure the rest of the system is up to the task first. amp (most important with maggies), preamp, source, power, resonance control, and acoustics....

Down-graded and happy?
If it helps, there's a whole thread somewhat dedicated this this. It's the Perpetual Merry-Go-Round thread. :-)
How Loud Do You Listen??? Do You Know?????????
80-85 for rock. 70-80 for classical. don't feel to old Will. Before I had my maggies, I used to listen to my electrostats at 75 max all of the time (they didn't sound right at louder volumes). in some way I miss those speakers as the maggies want ...

SACD versus Vinyl LPs
Tgrisham why settle for 16/44.1 redbook? Why not make 2CH 24/96 DADs onto writable DVDs on your computer? That should blow away any redbook CD. Just need a DVD transport (modifed or stock) and a DAC that will access 24/96. Or maybe a modified univ...
SACD versus Vinyl LPs
LP beats SACD. This is not surprising. It's a shame too, since I grew up with digital. I would have preferred not having to adopt vinyl. For for the ultimate in sound quality (for most of us) vinyl is still king. I adopted SACD prior to vinyl and ...
Monitors for HT system
I would look at the Omega speaker line using sensitive fostex drivers without crossovers. Probably untouchable at their price points for clarity at low volume listening levels.
