Budget DVD suggestions?
I would second the budget mod by EVS Tweakaudio. Disclaimer: I own one of his hand-built DACs.
DL103 vs. DL103R
I had speakers with peaky treble, and ultimately I had to get new speakers. It was just to tough trying to find synergy with speakers whose treble response rests of a knife edge of being tolerable. I would get a grado cart in your case.
DIY stylus-cleaning magic long
I'll be damned, it does work. I just tried the magic eraser last night. I could hear that my stylus needed to be cleaned (it's been a while) so instead of the trustly Extremephono solidstate goop, I tried the Magic Eraser. I watched it pull a very...
Need to tame bass
Agreed RE: speaker and listening chair replacement. That was how I got my bass response dialed in for all the better. It was boomy and sloppy before. My trick was to get my listening chair off of the back wall. With the chair out into the room som...
An audiophile who know NOTHING about TV
When I was shopping for a direct view TV set, I went to best buy on a slow day (wednesday). We looked at a few TVs on display (playing the mega-split coax demo feed) and narrowed it down to a handful of TVs. I grabbed a display VCR, rabbit ears, a...
An audiophile who know NOTHING about TV
get thee over to the avsforums!. Plan on reading for about 2 months straight! Then ye shall have the knowledge ye convets! For us the choice was simple. DLP front projection at 92 inches! Joy. And word of caution. There are no "perfect displays," ...
Best amp for Vandersteen 2sig
Quicksilver and McCormack - I read Richard Vandersteen recommend both of those brands of amps. Yeah, 80-100wpc of tube power should be plenty. ARC is also another recommended brand, but it is likely out of your budget.
Best Upgrade?
Probably CDSD transport or DCC2 DAC and linestage.
Wife approval factor?
Accorddude, I had much the same arrangement with my mom when I lived at home a few years ago. Yeah, the WAF thing here is all too really. You mostly see if with the guys here in their 40s and 50s (who not so surprising make up the majority of the ...
Fedex or UPS?
How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? You need to think like your competiting in a "physics egg drop contest." Ideally you'd want the equipment to be able to sustain up to a two story drop onto its corner. And be able to survive out in t...
Where will audio be in 10 years?
vinyl will still around. CDs will still be around (for backwards compatibility). We see some sort of Hi-Diff "DVD" on a 5-inch polycarbonate disc of some sort. Low rez downloads will still be prevailent. We'll see high-end players for the low-rez ...
Wife approval factor?
Nope, mine likes maggies. She recently suggested I upgrade from the four-foot tall mg-0.5/qr to the six-foot tall mg-2.5/r with 3/4 ribbon. The bigger size is not a problem with her. I even have the tube monoblock amps out well into the room with ...
SACD VS Vinyl for Jazz and Classical
I was in the same boat about year and a half ago. Do I continue to buy classical reissues on SACD or go for the vinyl? I think both SACD and vinyl are an "itch" that needs to be scratched. Every audiophile seems to need to try them at least once i...
Panasonic Direct View CRT TV and PS2
You should be OK then.
SACD... is this all there is?
Agreed Rob. Maybe it's time that Slappy got a vinyl rig? LOL.
