Need advice: Integrated amp for BW 804s
I had a Krell KSA100 with my B&W N804s but found that McIntosh amplification complimented them much better - tamed the highs and opened the soundstage. Therefore, I would recommend McIntosh hands down. Look at the MA6500. There are many posts ...
capacitor explanation?
Herman - thanks for the compliments. Your uncertainty in your last note about the emitter resistance lies in the fact that the resistance's definition is ambiguous in my statements. There are actually 2 emitter resistances, one internal to the tra...
capacitor explanation?
Conceptually, the coupling capacitors aid is separating each stage's design by blocking DC (since the caps are in series) and only allowing the AC portion of the signal. This aids in accurate transistor biasing and stage-impedance matching. The out...
Power Consumption idle
$0.14/kWh...WOW! We only pay $0.06 here (VA)!
Tube gear under $2k?
The Rogue Magnum series is excellent no matter which one. The Tempest gets you there without having to spend more money on 88+66. Used ones get snapped up really quickly however if the price is decent. Even the standard Rogues may give you all you...
McIntosh C2200 Pre-Amp
A third vote for the McIntosh. One hell of a unit in terms of sound and looks. I could not believe the sound quality and spaciousness when I heard it. I definately suggest you give it a try - and if you need an amp, the matching Mc2102 rocks as well.
Amps for jm lab mini-utopia - - any suggestions?
I second the McIntosh 2102 idea and would also like to say that I auditioned these speakers with the Revox Exception 120Wpc amp and preamp and the sound was sublime. I was very very impressed with the synergy, coherence, and utter silkiness that c...
Tubes with Paradigm Reference 100??
I was thinking of a CJ MV55 actually, or a PP EL34 amp like the ASL around 30W so this info comes in handy. The 100's impedance dips to 3 ohms (spurring my comment about being a hard load) but I think some tubes will be ok with that. Thanks again ...
Anyone familiar with 6C33C-B Power Tubes?
Antique Sound Labs uses them in their Ki22Fox integrated and KMP60Fox monoblocks. Check out tubestore.com for some info on buying them. The 6C33 is part of a family of high-transconductance tubes that are tough to design with but can deliver very ...
Paradigm Reference Studio vs. B&W N804
I agree 100% with Bulldogger, and actually, I bought Paradigm 100.2 to replace N804s. I liked the 804s and they certainly looked very good but the brightness just ended up getting to me. Their soundstage was a little constricted too. When I auditi...
Home HiFi better than Live?
It is funny how many people say "watching" rather than "listening" to a live concert in their descriptions of how much better the sound is live.... Arthur
Home HiFi better than Live?
I always thought this and sit back with a smile when everyone compares their systems to live music. As Seth points out, what is really meant is Unamplified live music. However, I have NEVER heard a band, even small ones, play unamplified music and...
Classe Cam-200 or Pass Labs X-150
Krell and Classe/Pass take quite different approaches to making music. Perhaps I am misinterpreting your name but I used to have a KSA100 that I liked but I have now moved on to more mellow sound too. You pose a tough question...I have heard the C...
High-End equipment for music peformance?
The Greatful Dead used McIntosh amps. On some of the stage shots you can see the blue meters and glass reflection in the background. I have always thought it was really cool. They were apparently big fans of nice equipment and had lots of it. As a...
advice about Cary & McIntosh needed ...
I listened to the Cary V12 for a long while one day playing big Soliloquys (6.3 I think) and it sounded very good. I also heard a Unison Research 845 integrated playing Royds that sounded even better - downright impressive and bizarre. I have also...
