Tube Preamp Recommendations
If your front end componets have beefy output stages, the amp has a high input impedance and you are using the preamp as an attenuator anyway (more on this later), try a Reference Line Preeminance II passive preamp. It will offer up a stunning amo...
Help me find a smooth solid-state amp?
Second the nod for the Forte 4 on the cheap side of the equation. Better yet get two. Also the Monarchy SE-100 deluxe is smoooth too, especially on vocals.
Who has actually listened to DVD audio?
It's like I've said before. DVD-A has been around for a while in the DAD format and from Chesky. The DVD-A spec allows for it. Not a very efficient method of packing 24/96 data onto a disk but it's there and it works....beautifully too. It's just ...
Musical threshold event
Hmm. Already getting some spread in the data! I will readily admit that really good music can poke its way thru poor equipment. I experience this all the time while listening to tunes over the radio in the metal alloyed, four wheeled, transportati...
"Burn in" Are you serious?
Actually, I had a chance to do a side by side comparison a couple of years ago. I had gotten two identical lengths of brand new Kimber 4TC speaker wire. I was going to bi-wire my speakers. I wanted to make sure the wire sounded all the same so I l...
Need help finding a subwoofer that is...
I can really recommend the Velodyne FSR or HGS series subs. Sealed box, front firing, adjustable corner points, a reasonnably steep slope to cut the subs top end off (12 DB per octave increasing to 48 DB per octave after the first octave)and they ...
Rowland Amps.....which one for me
Second the opinion on the Model one. One of the best amps Rowland made,in a great package and compliments the 2 2's tonally. You can try one in stereo and if you like it you can get another. They run about $1200-1400 each.
BEST Power Cable Under $100
At a used price of roughly $90-95, I can really recommend the Wireworld Aurora, especially on the digital stuff and the amp. Standard length is two meters and they are rare on the used market. Good luck
What makes / defines an audiophile ?
Is a male. Is the inverse of a music lover (Uses $20,000 worth of stuff to listen to a $200 stack of recordings (and usually a handful of CDs & records in that stack are listened to over and over again)as apposed to $200 worth of stuff to list...
Best DAC Under $5000 - Opinions Please
Second the Muse Model 9 Signature player. I've had mine for about a month now and it keeps getting better. Shows me just how GOOD red book CD can be. Also plays DVDs and 24/96 recordings. If you try it, use a really good passive line "stage" like ...
TOP TEN solid state amps of all time?
The Reference Line Silver Signature is a rare animal on the used market. Seen occasionnaly lurking on these pages under the cover of obscurity. It is large (95 lbs), hot (biased ALL the way into class A to rated output even into 4 ohms), has heat ...
Interconnect with good bass
Just want to say thanks for all the advice, especially the lead for Jeff's sound values. I ordered a 3M pair for something like $120, cheap by audiophile standards. They arrived promptly. They sounded a bit thin at first but after over 70 hrs of b...
DADs an "interim" format??
Kevin, yeah, thanks. A very clear explanation. So, DVD-V based audio disks are NOT an "interim" format. Just one option of what may be many. I'm not all wet after all...just totally befuddled. If the technology and process exists,... WHY NOT USE I...
Best used amp $750 range
The Forte 4a gets my vote. $600-700 used on the net. Very engaging. Will definately get your foot tapping.
Best DVD as transport
I like the Pioneer Elite DV-05. You can get one new for around $600. Great as a transport and one of the best damned DVD video players I've seen. Also is marvelous as a CD player into my Music Fidelity X-Can & Sennheiser HD600 cans. Didn't wor...
