CD/DVD transport VS. CD only transport
With the sliding out of the analog output board and sliding in of the digital output board, the Muse Model 9 can be quickly converted to the Model 8 transport. Both are outstanding. The Muse is a GREAT DVD player too.
CD players, one box or seperates?
The technology of digital signal transmition has reach such a level of understanding in the last few years that I believe a properly executed single box player is superior to a seperate transport & DAC at just about any given price point. The ...
Which DAC? Bel Canto? Assemblage? EVS?
I also have owned the Assemblage 3.1 and it is an exceptional DAC for the money. However, you may want to consider the Muse Model 9 Signature CD/DVD/DAD player. They can be had for right around $2600-2800 on the net. This player snuck in an quitel...
Help with speakers in 1500- 2000 range
A second on the Maggie 1.6 & Vandersteens. Also, the Apogee Stage can be had for ~$800-1000 with the stands and have enough money left over for a good sub. If you are into moving heavy objects, you can try the Apogee Slant 6 dynamic/ribbon hyb...
what are the best 4 ohms speakers out??
Apogee Diva, Duetta Signature, Caliper Signature, Stage, Studio grand. Being modern ribbon/planar magnetic speakers, they all hang out between 3-4 ohms and will definately get the watts (and current) out of what ever amp you pit against them. Fabu...
Bringing back the dead?
There is also the original Advent speaker and the original EPI-100. These speakers got me into the high end and they still sound great today.
Bringing back the dead?
Let's not forget the original Acoustat X. Spawned the birth of the full range eletrostat with balls.
Good Stuff Cheap
I'm on a roll now. The Vandersteen 2W sub ~$500. For front end stuff : Cal Icon MKII CD player, Pioneer DV-05 DVD/DAD/CD player and Sota Comet table - all for under $500 each.
Good Stuff Cheap
Well, I was going to add the Forte 1a amp to the list but somebody beat me to it! The Paradigm Studio 20 speaker is wonderful for the money and can be fetched for around $300-400 for the pair. On the wire side of the equation, good old Audioquest ...
amp stands
Went to Home Depot and bought 2, 24" x 24" x2" smooth concrete pavers. Sealed them with primer then spray painted a sand based tread paint from Rustoleum. Then I applied a large sheet of damping material I got from NAPA to the bottoms. The things ...
Pass Aleph-3 questions
Assumming you can bi-wire your speakers, you can try vertical, passive bi-amping with 2 Alephs and it should make a very noticable improvement. Part of this is because you have twice the power available (3 DB) but also, each amp will see the load ...
Help with amp selection
On the "cheap" side, Monarchy SE-100 series mono-blocks. Big, rich and warm but not at the expense of detail. On the more expensive end, the Roland Model 1. A warmer cable like the old Tara Labs Prime 1000 might also help.
Jokes of and about audiophiles
How long does it take for an audiophile to change a light bulb?Answer : Forever, because he can't get past the double blind testing.
Eminent vs MLs vs Maggies
If you are going to have a big, stange looking planar speaker in your house, you really aught to consider an Apogee. Parts are now available and there are two websites available for support so don't be afraid to investigate them. Specifically, I c...
Which Sony dvd playr is a good CD playr
The Pioneer DV-05, while not progressive scan, is still a great DVD player with very good CD play back as long as you use an active preamp. It will output the full 24/96 signal when properly set up thru the menu. Best of all you can score one on t...
