Need some wisdom comparing planars
Pardon me but the Maggie 1.6 does have some competition....Apogee. For about $800-1000 you can get a mint pair of Stages with the stands. They are a pain in the butt to set up but will reward you with stunning, natural sound. For about $1500-1800 ...
Best Passive Pre-amp with remote??
Reference Line preemminance I or II. Kinda clunky remote but great sonics $600-800 used.
Redbooks: as good on Sony SACD as on Cary 303?
Depends very much on the SACD player. I broke in my Sony 9000ES for at LEAST 500 hours by leaving it(forgot about it actually)in the basement for almost a month on repeat with the SACD demo running into 10K resisitors. Sounded pretty good. However...
SACD : why ?
OK, I'll venture that the format that wins (DVD-A or SACD) will be the first one that makes it into the automotive environment.
What is your opinion regarding electrostatics?
Actually, for the same amount of money as a 0.3(less actually), you could score a mint pair of Apogee Duetta Signature full range ribbons with an electronic x-over. Stunning looks, stunning speed, stunning bass and stunning soundstage. And they ar...
Speakers to hang on to for LIFE
I'm another person taken with the Apogee Stages. I've built my system around them and they keep doing it for me. I too am tri-amping them. While other components come and go, the Stages stay. The only other component that has hung around longer is...
Preamp expriences? Good value amp
As Yoda said, "There is another". As you are CD based, your amp has a good amount of gain, and your ribbons are VERY revealing, you really ought to check out one of the Reference Line Preemminance pre-amps. They are "passive" preamps with full swi...
Forte Model 7 Opinions
I agree with Sean in many ways. I've had both the Model 7 and 4a's running at the same time and made extensive comparisons. In a nut shell, they are cut from the same cloth, sounding very similar but I thought the Model 7 was a little forward comp...
Best Non Progressive DVD ......
The Pioneer Elite DV-05 is a strong pick. $350 used, very, very good CD performance, will play CD-R & RW, DVD performance just as good as the DV-09 (I know, because I have both), and has an excellent remote (Instead of the train wreck called a...
Unbelievable Solid State Amp at 2-3k ran
If you can find one, I recommend a Reference Line Silver Signature. Built like a tank, class A operation all the way to clipping into 3 ohms, and nice looking. They have about 36 DB worth of gain though so your pre-amp matching becomes more of an ...
Passive bi-amping works ?
Not so fast. With passive bi-amping, both amps still see the full range of the input signal. Yeah, you get twice the power if you use one more amp like you had before but you don't get the benefits of limiting the bandwidth of the INPUT signal to ...
Amplification for Maggie MG 1.6Qr s
I agree with Ramstl. Current , current, and then a little more...current. Maggies, like all planar/magnetic panels (Apogees for example) crave it. I have found deeply biased into class A operation work great. Reference Line (yes, they still do exi...
Martin Logan Don t Rock
If you like the floor to ceiling and wall to wall (and beyond) sound staging of a properly set up panel speaker, I can highly recommend Apogee Duetta Signatures or Divas with a good sub that has a good high pass filter for the panels (such as a Ve...
Electrostat Speakers with sub. Finally
Group hug!
RCA Sub for 350 dollars. Nice sounding
And guess what....the subs are on sale for $199 along with a bunch of other stuff. Sounds like a good deal to me. I'm checking one out, especially since I can return it if I don't like it.
