Should we care if a piece of equipment comes from a pet-free, kid-free, smoke-free home?

I agree that I do not want a preamp or speaker coated with a film of smoke, but I am confused as to what a child or pet could do that would not be otherwise visible. You would see the cat scratches on the speaker grill, the dog chew marks on the rack, the iguana turds in the amplifier cooling vents. And what's a little dog hair among friends? As a 3 year old, I supposedly put my finger through my grandfather's new DIY speaker but I'm pretty sure he replaced the drivers so even that doesn't really matter. Most things will be visible and/or easily remedied.  Maybe the price will even be a little lower because of the cosmetics. If it doesn't mess with function, not a big deal to me.

What concerns me more is does it come from a drunk-free, drug-free home.  I think befuddled owners are far more worrisome than pets or children.

The problem with people who stink - and I would put most smokers in that category - is that they don't know they stink.

The same could be said for radicals not knowing how radical they really are, but I'll stick to the topic at hand.

I don't care if someone smokes on their patio but I don't want a piece of used gear to smell like smoke, and frankly I'm not sure a smoker is fully capable of discerning whether or not there is any odor on the amp/DAC/whatever it is. I have returned gear for exactly that reason in the past, thankfully the seller was honorable but it could have gone otherwise.

You must study the real first social conditioning manual way before Marx who derive all his analysis of social classes from the "market" ideas and values and prices created by Mandeville whom Adam Smith plagiarized completely. Replacing the "vices" after the Fall and predestination background of Calvinist Mandeville by the more innocuous and more presentable idea of selffishness.

Then Marx completely is derivable by the ideas from the " Doctor of the soul" Mandeville whose description of classes fit more today that at the times because they appear more evident than in 1714. Marx is intelligent but not a genius, Mandeville was way too advanced to be completely understood. Even Freud appear less a genius compared to him. ( By the way he was a psy a doctor of the soul and he cured people by listening them speak exactly as Freud will do, but he was not sexually obsessed as Freud , he was interested more by the social phantasms desires of most men like Adler )

The goal of Mandeville before Malthusian politic in the scarcity state of the industrialisation beginings and the first decade of Democracy in England was double : creating abundance with the liberalization and organization of the private "vices" for the benefit of the public "virtue", and also without the tyrannical power replaced by democracy, creating social means of control, the manual for any future economist and politician.

He described if we use modern concept three classes :

The criminal psychopaths , a few , who rules because they had understood how to manipulated with words programming the crowd essentially nevrotic people who dream about recognition , virtue representation , honors, medals, titles, and any created and propagated phantasms.

Under these two clases there is the marginal sociopaths who dont belive in the "public honors and virtues" and who act not for power and control but only for pleasures and the vices they prefered over all .

Now think about the Man who describe the best our societies , Mandeville or Marx?

Why do you think Hayek called Mandeville our Master ?

https://www.maggs.com/dr-bernard-mandeville-lecture-on-a-master-mind_231842.htm

There was a censorship and an underestimation of Mandeville, who was forbid and put on the stake all over Europe... he was presented as a fable creator as Lafontaine and Aesop not and never as a thinker ... He was call the " man of the devil" Man devil , ... Why ?

Adam Smith , Marx and even Freud , he anticipated them all in 1714 creating the concept of the unconscious with the concept of social classes as in Reich and Marcuse . Some genius are way too deep and in advance to be understood in their life time ..

" No man is here (in society) where he think he is " Bernard Mandeville 🧐

@mahgister Like a couple of others, I enjoy your comments and I agree with most of your points about authoritarianism, and fascist and communist political movements. However, I think you misunderstand Karl Marx thoroughly. Your description of communism applies to the likes of Lenin, Trotsky, and Mao who appropriated the language of Marx to legitimize their authoritarian impulses and objectives,

Your description of communism applies to the likes of Lenin, Trotsky, and Mao who appropriated the language of Marx to legitimize their authoritarian impulses and objectives, much the way Trump and other authoritarian personalities currently exploit the rhetoric of Christian fundamentalism and nationalism to legitimize their authoritarian purposes. Christian nationalism is a desecration of Christianity equally as offensive as the manipulation of Islam by Muslim radicals. As you said, we all must think for ourselves. As Nietzsche said, if you seek peace of mind, believe; if you seek truth, inquire.
