I have sold three watches in recent years with little loss. I live in a rural area and I do not travel much, so I have never seen a GO in person so it makes such a buying consideration tough. Don't get me wrong, I am sure the watch would be stunning, but enough to part with mine, assuming I could even afford it after that??? |
Brian, great choice--the Glashutte Original as are the Lange1 are already a classic and a good investment too! They will be snapped up pretty quickly in the used market at good prices. Had my Lange1 for about 5yrs and traded them at almost no loss! (of course their rrp was up around 20-30% since then). For watches, if you choose good--you will not loose much, and if choose great--you may even make some upon re-selling. Sad to say, this never happens with audio.. =((

Here's a suggestion- sell half your collection and take the money to either a poverty area in the USA or to Central America and build a school. The rush will be an order of magnitude better than the rush of buying another watch or preamp. |

mine are two basic ones, the RM010 in WG (plain), and RG (w/diamond bezel). I loved their tourbs--beautiful, RM008 being my favorite, but too much for right now. Wanted to get the RM011 last year actually, but ended up spending the money on a 'pre-amp' instead! =) Well, torn between hobbies, just gotta give in somewhere.
You have amassed a great collection there yourself! Loved your Pans--Black Seal! I have the 1950 and their early 40mm Chrono (Zenith's) in bracelet. Used to loved and owned the Lange1 and Datograph, but ever since got used to the ROO size watches, have traded most of them for limited APs. |

Just as in audio, I too have weaknesses for watches. Though my preference runs along the larger sized sport varieties. Luckily, they happen to have pretty good credentials and historical background as well, thus collecting and making them another hobby quite worthwhile.
In my current collections are Patek Philippe, Richard Mille, Roger Dubuis, De Lacour, Rolex (inherited), Panerai, and as stated earlier, mostly are the Limited Editions ROO (Royal Oak Offshores) from AP (Audemars Piguet). They are beautiful to behold, looks great worn, and most even appreciate in value.. =)) |
A tube powered full size grandfather clock, with $500 cables connected to a face plate light. It's heavy, but it really tells time well, and with none of the harshness of a modern wristwatch - its more like the real thing. |

My Omega Seamaster Automatic is from the late 50's. I remember the family getting together to buy this one for my Dad's birthday back then. When I noticed he wasn't wearing it any more, I asked about it. He said it was too much trouble now, so he gave it to me. A very simple, clean design, it is in great shape and looks almost new. 2:28 PM Uh, oh... back to work. |

Get a quartz watch for time keeping. The rest is jewelry. I have a Seiko thin dress watch, a Wenger sport watch that I use swimming, a Seiko kinetic that I like alot, and a Citizen eco-drive with a turning bezel with major cities over the globe which helps figure time differences. |

Fake Rolex, I bought in Mexico for $100.00. It has keep perfect time for two years. The second hand sweeps smoothly like it should . People do seem to notice but don't ask, that would be rude. |

1. Jaeger LeCoultre Master Geographic in Stainless 38mm face- my preferred watch for business and business travel.
2. Ventura Loga Steel- my first "high end" watch and still my favorite. Also 38mm face. Sadly this understated modern aesthetic company is no longer in business. I designed the Enigma to have a similar aesthetic to this amazing watch.
3. Sinn U1 with black rubber wrist band- a new watch for sailing and rugged duty. It's BIG (that's the- in- thing) but 38mm to 40mm seem a better fit for me.
Thats it-as a rule I do not spend for more then one watch per 3 to 5 years.

Either a PAM 111 or a Submariner.
I've had many others (Chronoswiss, GP, Blancpain, IWC, Silberstein, Chopard, JLC) but settled on the PAM and the Sub as the most practical. |

Rolex watches, being self-winding mechanisms, must be adjusted to the user's regular movement patterns.
This is done from within the watch (by the Rolex Service guy) after the user has kept a week-long diary of daily time loss/gain.
I've had my Submariner for 20 years now and can get it accurate to +1 or +2 seconds per day.
If you don't wear your Rolex constantly but keep it on an automated moving machine, it can never be accurate for both you and the machine.
A Rolex should NEVER run slow as this will spiral into inaccuracy....rather it should always be set to run 1 or 2 seconds fast per day. |

I never owned an IWC but I have always like them... I came very close to purchasing a IWC DaVinci Perpetual Calendar but i was unable to see the day date and year. Very nice watch. I wish my eyes were better. :O) |

I tried on a white faced Milguass, it was very nice but not really for me; I like the tinted green crystal version the best. As for losing minutes, again, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, I have not experienced this nor others I know.
Enough of that. I don't recall seeing an IWC in your list, have you owned any? I haven't had the pleasure to view one in person, but I have looked at a lot of pictures, they look quite nice. |

Thank you. Don't get me wrong I'm still a big fan of Rolex their new Oyster Perpetual Milgauss is off the chain... They do in fact tend to lose a few minutes but that never stopped me from purchasing one... Rolex is a awesome watch. |

While I don't have near the experience as you, I must take exception to the statement, "Lastly for the record Rolex keep the worst time..."
Clearly you own the brand so you have experience, but I find this untrue for several (good) reasons. First, I too have experience with the brand and have found them to do a stellar job; Second, I have spent a fair amount of time on TimeZone.com, too much in fact, and the track record of the MANY people on those forums differs with your view; Third, while I have not read a lot of reviews in watch magazines, the few I have read have always given Rolex high marks in this area.

This is topic near & dear to my heart because I've been a watch freak since childhood. I can recall my six grade graduation my parents asked me what did I want for a gift I told them a watch with a day date complication.
Listed below are my current collection of timepieces. I keep everything in Underwood Watch Winders. I guess you tell I love chrono's. Thank goodness for my excel spreadsheet I was able to cut and paste. Watches are my true passion it's actually an obsession. We all have our vices. 8>)
My next addition will be the Patek Annual Calendar, in white gold. I've been at this for a while now and have no plans on stopping. My two sons have already made their claims.
Lastly for the record Rolex keep the worst time but they do have a very good resale value. My first Rolex I purchased was the OYSTER PERPETUAL DateJust in SS & 18ct. Yellow Gold in 1986 for $1800.00 I sold it in 2005 for $1700.00. I've also sold my Presidentials and made out well. I feel as if they draw too much attention and for the money you can get a much better timepiece. e.g. PATEK, VACHERON CONSTANTIN, A. LANGE & SOHNE, IWC. I like watches that most people won't have any idea what you are wearing. I could gone on with this topic all day but I won't. Does anyone have the time.

I have a rolex gmt master II in two tone with black face which I have been wearing alomst every day. It sent my two tone rolex blue face submariner to the watchwinder and only comes out when I am in the woods, or diving. I have a rado jubilee which hasn't been worn since I got my first rolex. |
Much like audio, a well built quality piece ascends above the hype and becomes a classic. I think my 1955 Universal Geneve polerouter fits the bill. Wear it every day, never had an issue.
I have a few transition era antiques that I collect for their "beautiful things" factor. About as accurate timekeepers as Bose faithfully reproduces audio though |
I currently have three that I wear. A Fortis Flieger Chronograph, a Sinn U1, and a cheap Seiko diver. Have had a few others that were sold due to lack of wrist time. But the three listed above make me happy. I do miss a Stowa Marine Auto I had :( |

The thing is the most bulletproof mechanical watch I have owned.
Which will be relevant when the EMP of a nuclear attack or comet strike renders anything with gallium in it useless.
Fortunately, pure tube equipment will be unaffected.
As long as you have a power source designed by Faraday.
Wonder why all the tubes come from Russia or China?
Or the mechanical watches from Switzerland?

That's one of the reasons I bought my Zenith El Primero. The other is it is/was probably the most accurate Swiss Chronometer. The third is it looks very, very nice - understated and classic.

The coolest [production] watch out there in conceptual terms, IMHO, is f p journe's chronometre a resonance. I think it looks nice too but the idea, if it actually works, is really neat. |
