After several Hot Stampers from Better-records.com I have pretty much given up on reissues. When a guy tells you your Super Hot Sinatra-Basie is the best recording he has ever heard you know you are on the right track. Everyone I play them for is like WTF how is this so good??! No, they are not that quiet. Yes they are used. Yes they will take them back. For any reason. Or none at all. No, I have never felt like sending one back. Even though my Silk Degrees is very noisy, much noisier than my other two copies, but the sound quality is like the master tape. Not from the master tape. The master tape.
I have never heard that anywhere else. Patricia Barber Cafe Blue 1STEP is awfully close. Clearly this is a superb recording. Certainly the vinyl is incredibly dead silent. I could almost swear the groove noise I’m hearing is actually tape hiss from the master. Maybe it is. Yet for all its technical perfection there is some spooky black magic going on with these Hot Stampers.
Try and hear for yourself why I am done with MFSL.
