Being I am a 6 year tube owner of Raven Audio Osprey & now Reflection...You can not go by what others say about tube sound until you put them into your amp and if new break them in to get the full value of tubes purchased..I have had tubes others rave about and I hear them and think not to my hearing ...But what you listen for from music may play a big part vs others hearing.. I seem to search more for detail / instruments then I do the singing ..But it is a chase that will never end as long as you have tubes and always wonder what next set will sound like..And yes it is a expensive hobby to chase better sound from tubes .Unless you know someone to swap .. And like me I know of know one that is in this hobby to swap tubes. But you know when you find those special sounding tubes the sound last for few months or a year and another chase starts ..
Tubes for Primaluna DiaLogue Premium HP
Hello,
I am thinking of upgrading my tubes on my PrimaLuna Dialogue Premium HP.
It already has The stock Prima Luna 12au7 preamp tubes and the 8 kt120’s.
I am thinking of upgrading the 6 preamp tubes to Gold Lion ECC82 / B749 / 12AU7.
And is there a recommended larger tubes for this amp?
In general I year for a super wide soundstage, super forward presentation, sultry mids…
I hear that replacing the two gain tubes (?) with Mullard CV4003 has really good results…
And I hear of Gold Lion Kt 77 (?) have terrific results for the large tubes?
Am running B&W 803 Nautilus speakers.
Thoughts?
Thank you!
Richard
There are a zillion tube comparisons/reviews online, where you can get an idea of what your ears MIGHT agree with, but only your ears should be the judge. Gold Lion reissues are a popular new tube. Higher priced than other new tubes. "Sublime, super wide sound stage, dripping golden. Midrange…. Vocals… acoustics… jaw dropping…" Get season tickets to the Philharmonic in your city, or go to more concerts. Dump your setup, start from scratch with a dedicated room and extra $50K+ for "budget" audiophool gear.

I used to have a pair of the HPs run in mono config. A few other input tubes you may want to consider are the RCA 5814 black plates, GE 5814s, or if you want a brighter sound try some RCA 12AU7 clear tops. All are fairly easy to find on the NOS or used market. the other area you may want to consider is replacing that 0.1uf white cap on each side (used to add filtering to the B+ for the input tubes) with a Miflex copper foil or a Jupiter copper foil cap. Same would apply to the coupling caps. |
