Technics Compact Linear Trackers, SL-__; SL-Q____ Vertical SL-V5. ADVICE PLEASE
". Anyone near Foothill, Ontario willing to pick it up, pack, ship to me, I will pay of course. ONLY ONE for sale, very nice unit, very low price, a shame, a dirty rotten shame to not get it. Seller could keep it till you pick it up at your convenience. I would be most appreciative, and take my lumps if anything happened, it is only $200. CAD, $150. USD, well worth the risk to me." That is an ad Elliott. |
I purchased an SL-10 about 6 months ago. Have been very pleased and it gets used everyday now. I suppose most wouldn't consider it audiophile grade, whatever that means, but quite frankly it is better than I ever expected it to be. While it has a built in step up for the Technics EPS-310 cartridge I haven't used it since my external phono has multiple gain settings. I guess I should try it sometime. |
uberwaltz thanks, SL-10 is 1980-1984, seems plentiful for future repair parts I am still trying for the SL-V5 Vertical One, just because it would look so special next to my vertical X1000r. Even though it is the only one around, I have been told the standard SL-5 horizontal version uses identical parts, so I am less concerned about future repairs of the rare V5. I found a Canadian friend 1-1/2 hours away to pick it up. UPS, and UPS Canada, will pack and ship, all anyone has to do is put it in a bag and drop it off. UPS will bill my credit card, but seller hasn’t responded to my messages, very frustrating ........................................... numbers and dates of these compact models are in no way logical: from Vinyl Engine. clio09 thanks for responding and encouragement, regarding phono eq: My modern Audio Technica LP-120 has switchable phono preamp. I had McIntosh Solid State C28 Preamp, I actually preferred the TT's built-in phono preamp to the McIntosh. I went back to tubes: sold the SS C28 and got a very old McIntosh Tube Tuner/Preamp mx110z, I prefer it's phono to the TT's. Loce this mx110z. Happily the mx110z has TWO Phono Inputs. Without anticipating it, when I went for my 2 arm turntable, I simply switch arms via Phono 1 and Phono 2. I'm now using vintage JVC Victor TT81 spinner, will give the Audio Technica LP120 to a friend when safe to visit him. It is too deep to fit in my office bookcase, that is why I am after one of these compact TT's, and that Vertical one would look so cool. |
Have you looked at reputable dealers located in Japan or Hong Kong? HiFiDo is one such, located throughout Japan. They do a massive mail order business and are expert packers and shippers. Use the internet and google "Hifido English". There you will see an English translation of equipment they have for sale usually with prices and extensive photo documentation. They usually have oodles of Technics turntables of all types. Whatever that guy in Canada has, it's not the only one in the world. By the way, go for quartz reference over no quartz reference. |
found one in New Zeland https://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/home-audio/turntables/listing-2656581393.htm |
I still say you should try to find one in Japan or Hong Kong, from a reputable dealer who is experienced in mail order business. That way you are unlikely to be coming back to this forum in a few months asking how you can get your damaged Technics turntable repaired. Japan and HK are both closer to home than NZ. |
lewm I get it, just that I can't find one anywhere, the canadian one is now unlisted, new zealand only one I can find, as for repairs, the parts of horizontal sl-5 are identical so that is the only fact that helps me consider one. uberwaltz, I have very little interest paying for shipping from there, and imagine if there was a problem. |
I apologize for being so dogmatic. If you are patient and follow the listings on a site like Hifido English, eventually you will find what you want. But if you find one elsewhere, that's fine too. I was only trying to channel you in a good direction with respect to shipping. Most private sellers cannot or won't make the effort to pack a TT properly. |
lewm, vegasears, others thanks for the leads and ideas, I always appreciate and benefit from help here which is why I start these threads. Bill, who I met here on-line, coincidentally lives 1 hr away in NJ, and we met yesterday. He bought a big plinth from Vlad, the russian in Canada, and was able to see my big plinth setup, learn from my 'mistakes'. We swapped some equipment, I now have a Vertical Turntable project Mitsubishi LT-5V https://www.vinylengine.com/library/mitsubishi/lt-5v.shtml so, if you believe in Karma, it's a good thing the Canadian with the vertical technics v5 was such a recalcitrant arseeee |
here is a slanted base that fits the compact SL-10 http://auc.aleado.com/yahoo/lot?auctionID=o336887016 can any of these compact linear dd be used on a slanted base? I'll make my own for the SL-J33 I bought. |
