At the moment you've got "Blurred Lines" and Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" in the news due to a pending lawsuit. George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" and half of Jimmy Page's songs were subject to similar legal action. Harrison lost - and IIRC (and it's possible that I might not) Page settled quietly more than once.
My own observation would add Pretender's "Time The Avenger" vs The Outsiders' "Time Won't Let Me" and Deep Purple's "Rat Bat Blue" vs an Allman Bros tune (title eluding me right now) to the list. There are tons more....it's just the nature of rock/pop music. |

What an interesting post. Your George Harrison/Chiffons analogy is a good one.
The 1975 power ballad 'All By Myself' by Eric Carmen and Sergei Rachmaninoff's piano concerto no. 2 in c minor , opus 18. I didn't find this out until the mid 80's while listening to Rachmaninoff. |
...all country music these days ! They ALL sound the same. |
Another is Steely Dan's Rikki Don't Lose that Number and Horace Silver's Song for my Father. According to a book on Steely Dan, this was supposed to be a tribute to Horace. Meh. Not sure I am buying that. |
Spirit: Taurus and LED ZEP: Stairway to Heaven. |
This is a great topic. I hear similarities often, but I can never remember them later. One that comes to mind is that there was a song that was popular on the radio that sounded like a complete rip-off of Joe Jackson's "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" Can't remember what the song was though. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
Regarding George Harrison, I believe the court ruled that, although Harrison did not intentionally plagiarize the Chiffons, he had accidentally written an extremely similar song and was still liable. In an ironic twist, I also believe the Chiffons did a cover version of My Sweet Lord while the suit was pending. |
Jefferson Airplane sounds like Beetles. |
Nirvana's Come as You Are, sounds like Eighties from Killing joke..or vice versa. |
The Offspring - Why Dont You Get A Job sounds like The Beatles - Obladi Oblada the chorus section in particular.
The Foo Fighters - Times Like These . sounds like Glen Frey's 80s track - The heat is on. once again similar tune.
