Sounds like a bad volume encoder. Sometimes you can carefully clean the contacts. They use a grease in some encoders that gets crusty over time and causes your exact same problem. I have repaired several of these type of encoders.
It could also be a faulty optical encoder but your symptoms really suggest a bad encoder. The fact the remote works is a good indicator

Yes, I think that it is a faulty optical encoder based on the sim system. It did work for a period last night but again today it does not. sometimes it will work other times increases volume in both directions. Very disappointed as the sound of the amp is wonderful. Time for a return. Thanks for the comments.

Sorry to hear you need to return it . Unfortunately that can happen when something is stored and not used for a long time. Good luck with your search.

That's not right. I have the 600i v1 and am unaware of any setting that would make that possible.
|
I have found if I jiggle the volume/select knob just right and hurl the correct foul insults at the amp it returns to normal function. Just giggling and insulting by themselves does not work. Now it is working correctly but will talk to the seller about remedy, it is a very reliable audio dealer so I am sure that they will help me out. It really sounds wonderful with a MSB analog dac and Dynaudio C1 platinum speakers.

If you really like it and they will cover the repair and shipping it's probably worth the effort. Moon is good stuff.

I own a 600iv2 and this happened to me recently. The unit was unplugged and had not been used for over a month. When I plugged it in and turned it on it behaved the way you described. Totally disappointed and turned it off. The next day I turned it on again and the problem went away; unit has worked normally since (crossing fingers).
|
BTW I love the sound of the 600iv2!
|
@oddiofyl What exactly happens when the amp is not used for a long time?
|
@classic8 this is exactly what I am experiencing. This morning it was working well and everything worked normally. I listened for about 2 hrs then had some work to do. Now, tonight, still all is perfect. After listening for a few hours and drinking some tasty adult beverages I asked it, what the f@#%, why are you behaving this way? I had enough to drink by that time that I could hear a reply. Something about if you ignore me you will pay. I asked the amp if it had been talking to my wife and the only reply was for the display to be a brighter red. So, I am hopping things are good for now. Because it really does sound amazingly good. I will still reach out to the dealer and Simaudio. By that time I might have had enough to drink that I will be able to speak Canadian. Eh?
|
@davt Hehehe! Glad it is working now - maybe @oddiofyl can explain what is happening. I am big Simaudio fan and love my 600iv2. So your unit was new in the box?
|
No, it was a used demo, probably 2-4 years old and has likely sat idle for a number of months. I am thinking that this idleness might affect the rather complex selection, volume dial. People have told me that the Simaudio equipment needs some time to warm up. Or, Simaudio is made with spirits of long dead musical wraiths in the design, you know, like vacuum tubes, only not as unpredictable, and that every once in a while they act up.
|
Ahh ok - I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed my 600iv2 - it’s my flagship amp. Yes, who knows what ghosts live in our machines :)

When a mechanical encoder is built there is a dielectric grease used . That grease can get crusty and make it act exactly like OP is experiencing.
I had a preamp and receiver that did that , I carefully opened the crimped body of the encoder , cleaned it, put it back together and problem solved. It could be an optical encoder that's bad but I think it mechanical based on the symptoms.

Sim Audio makes excellent gear , can happen to any company, any component. Look forward to what the resolution is.

Just wanted to give an update. All is working properly with the 600i V2 and it still sounds wonderful. I guess the amp does not like being ignored.
|
That’s great news. Enjoy.
