Rogue Dragon Tube Recommendations

Just purchased a Rogue Dragon Amp.  The stock tubes are Ok.  Any better choices out there.  Bass seems fine.  Lacking in Midrange.

@dekay I followed your recommendation and just ordered a pair of Amperex Holland Orange World for my Primaluna Dialogue Premium integrated.

Your budget is a bit light for the best 12AU7s, as they are disappearing fast right now; and new stock just does not seem to be coming on line. $100 each will get you better tubes; but as others have suggested, give Brent Jessee a call....he's got his finger on the pulse.

From my personal experience and preference in the $100 and lower: $100 Amperex E80CC/6085 (12AU7 compatible) early 1960s gold pins, $90 Mullard 12AU7 1960s "Shield logo", $99 RCA 5814 or 6189 (12AU7 compatible), $49 RCA 12AU7 Blackplates 1950s, $49 RCA "Clear Tops" great tubes that are disappearing fast (you will love them or hate them....I love them)

The Amperex Holland Orange World/Globe logo @ Brent Jessee for approx. $120/pair are what I would suggest (even if your budget were much more).

I've been using them as well as Mullard Blackburn production from the same late 60's period for 20+ years in my preamp.

Both are warm, musical and big/3D sounding.

I live in the Chicago are.  New Jersey is a little far.  Thanks for the offer.  Will check out the other  option though. Thanks.

Contact Nick @ Rogue as someone already suggested. They had RCA clear tops for my RP-5 pre and recommended those for their lusher midrange.

Not sure if the same applies to the Dragon. I'd be curious to know the findings. I'm going to try a Dragon in my setup shortly.

Rogue sells better tubes for replacements. Contact Nick Fitzimmons.

And Andy's is another option.

where do you live? I'll have to check but I think I've got a small bunch of used 12au7's, you could borrow various brands, listen, get some insight

Yep.  Find out what the Stock Tubes are then contact Andy's Tube Services and be prepared to tell him what your looking for. He ain't easy to get holt of but its worth it. My Mullards from him have been valving for years.

I would check out Brent Jesse's site. He is very helpful, so I would contact him. Link below.

I personally like Amperex and Older Mullard Long Plates.
