Replacing JL Audio F112 v1

I need some advice.   I have two JL Audio F112v1 that I have had for 16 and 17 years.  I’ve had great luck with them and I think they blend and sound terrific with my focal scala utopia Evo speakers.  One of them finally died and it sounds pretty expensive to have it repaired.   I’ve been thinking of using the existing F112 that still works just for an LFE channel in my Home Theater system and buying new F112v2s for my stereo system.   This is a pretty expensive investment so I’ve been considering some other subwoofers.

Has anyone had any experience with the new SVS SB-17 Ultra sealed subwoofers?  Much larger driver than my existing JL Audio but the price is good.  I just want them to blend and sound dynamic…Not boomy.  Of course I would set them up as best as possible for the best sound.

Thanks

The issue you are having may be bad capacitors. JL has known issues with F112v1 capacitors and issued a "DYI" cap replacement memo that specifies which caps to replace -- a total of 8.

If you are not an DYI'r (yes, there's a bit to this), the parts cost is less than $20 if you can get the JL to a competent servicer.  We are proactively doing this for a customer at present.

I am usually pretty complimentary of manufacturers and try to give them the benefit of the doubt.  But, JLs option of $3k+ for a V2 upgrade is not a customer-focused alternative to a broken V1.  "The boards are no longer available, so your unit is dumpster material, or pay us $3k (plus the cost of shipping the unit it us + sales tax)" is not my idea of how to take care of customers who paid a premium for a "best in class" product;  (I was a JL dealer for 20+ years)

For years JL has been repairing the V1s for $400 including shipping. Did they stop doing this?

My HT system uses JL 12" e-subs, which are less expensive than the Fathom.  The difference is the Fathom series have built in room integration software, the e-subs don't have it and rely on the software that came with the pre/pro.  If that is an option with your system it's a cheaper way to stay with the JL subs.

If one has mid level mains, SVS or Rythmic are fine but they won't be fast enough to do the high end Focals justice.  Speed is not about how fast they make sound but actually how fast they stop making a sound and get out of the way again.  Power and grip is what's needed to make this happen and unfortunately you get what you pay for.

This very thing you speak of is why Rythmik subs incorporate servo technology

This is indeed a very perplexing statement.

@mesonto  He’s probably never even heard a Rhythmik sub and can’t even spell it right.  Anyone who’s owned or heard a Rhythmik sub knows this is just wrong.
