My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Great sounding amp!

Can't be a Pass Labs amp or it would have melted the cover off.
Sounds like some tube amp

or some pure class A low power amp. ( agreed with previous poster )
One of the latest class D offerings, e.g. by MBL N51, using a huge linear powersupply?

The treble speed, and low end punch (hammer) could just point to that. Seriously.
Michélle 🇿🇦
Based upon the adjectives, I could also guess Soulution (maybe it's my wishful thinking), but I think the only thing under $20K from them is the 311 Stereo amp, so probably not.
Dave
It won't last for 3 weeks. Who said I was keeping anything??
I report my findings but does that mean I have to own it ? Don't forget I own gryphon and Momentum already..
WC,
How many 20A lines do have into your room?  Just one, or more?  Do you run everything off 20A lines or do you have lower power stuff off 15A lines?

Also, what type of wall outlets do you use?

Probably at time you built room you discussed in thread but at that time I probably glossed right over it. Thx
I have two 30a and two 20a outlets.

That said, I might have to turn the 30a into 20a outlets because I get buzzing sound. I think that buzzing sound I hear occasionally is due to the 30a outlets. I am no electrician but let's see what my findings are.

As far as Wilson being the only thing I keep forever, I have owned 3 pairs of Wilsons so they don't stay here forever either. Once I am locked in and interested in something, I begin to aim and then sell whatever it might be replacing as long as it is part of my future plans. For now, the DAW have served me extremely well and don't have a reason to sell them until something else comes in that I feel I like more.
It’s good to have on constant in the mix too, or how do you know if an amp, etc is really an improvement or not, could be the speakers after a recent change. If anything I might leave one set as the standard theat  g gets tested with for comparisons, then have another set that could change, and also different amps play better with some speakers than others, so that could show something about that. Once I’m able to get set up, I’ll have the Shashas, the 800D3s and the Tekton Ulferberhts so that should give me some nice variance and options to play around with. Won’t be able to change the gear like you do though as that would be a huge issue with the wife, and I don’t have the same agreement with mine on that subject.
WC,
If the new secret amplifier is so good, why get rid of it in 3 weeks or less?  Let's hear the great amps in shootouts against each other, like the Merrill 118, Gryphon, secret amp.  I know the Merrill 114 well, which is close to the 118.  The recording you used to play the 118 was processed like canned spam, so use a brilliant recording to A/B/C the top amps.
Thought it was interesting JA said the JC1+ was the more tubelike between the two.
whitecamaross, I'm in need of some advice. Some of my system is like your's (at least yours at one point!), McIntosh 602 amp (600 watt stereo) and C46 preamp, ps audio direct stream dac. 16' by 14' listening room. What speakers would you recommend for best all around synergy?
@slowe2020...
hi,
this question is one PERFECT EXAMPLE of the typical questions i get via private messages or email. It is always important to know this:

  • how much are you wanting to spend?
  • what do you listen to? hardcore rock? metal? jazz? pop?
  • what are you lacking with your current speakers?
  • what would you like to achieve with the new speakers?

it is nearly impossible for me to tell you what will make each person happy because this is all about flavors. I have my own desires and wants with audio, but they might not appeal to some of you.
I value the following:

  • Big soundstage
  • Depth
  • Clarity (can't deal with warm speakers)
  • Tight bass (not necessary for it to be super deep)
  • Not Bright
  • Last but not least, has to have resolution

If a speaker fails to give me  the first 3 bullet points above, it is automatically leaving my room. This happens to be one thing i love about Wilson speakers by the way (3 top bullets).
I will probably put together a video of the top speakers i have owned in the past and the top 2-3 worst speakers as well.
That was fun. I like the category concept and the idea of scoring.

A couple of suggestions: with separate categories for each of resolution, clarity and detail, it may be that these similar or arguably overlapping categories are overweighted.

I can think of a couple that would be interesting. Maybe it’s encompassed by what you already have but what about straight up treble performance?  How good does the amp gets the highs?  You have a category for bass but not explicitly for highs (although I suppose could be argued detail or clarity or resolution might cover).

Another idea: low volume level performance. Lots of amps sound good when loud but lose their bearings at low volumes.

Anyway, just my thoughts. The low volume I suspect probably not too important to you based on your like it loud preference you’ve mentioned especially in this thread.
Disregard at will if you like. Videos Enjoyable as always.
@blumartini
RIP My man. I wish you the best of luck in your new journey up above.
Sad news for me. We never know when our last day will be. We are all certainly on borrowed time.
Rip blumartini. 😞

Back on topic. Luxman M-900u is still « the below 20k champ » imho.
Much better casing build that is just completely in another class, well above the Moon. Lux 15k msrp, Moon 18k msrp...

Gold plated circuit boards in the Lux.

Luxman since 1935, Moon since early 2000s...

The Luxman is a limited Edition Rollex, the Moon is a pimped TAG Huer.

860A V2 is a power house compared to luxman. other than the pretty build quality of luxman, its not an even comparison

Luxman M-900U
Power (8/4ohms) : 150/300w
Gain : 29 dB
Power Supply Capacitance uF : 100,000
Transformer : One 1.2 KVA

SimAudio
Power (8/4ohms) : 225/450w
Gain : 31 dB
Power Supply Capacitance uF : 240,000
Transformer : Two of 1.2 KVA

simaudio is a dual mono design and has plenty of current reserve to drive demanding loads
look at the transformer and capacitance both of them are double/twice in simaudio 860A V2.

IMO its a no contest, other than the fact if some one wants a sweet amplifier like luxman.
also simaudio is not colored and extremely neutral which is a plus over sweet sounding luxman

That power will never be used with most speakers, unless you have very demanding ones. Getting two used M-900u in mono configuration for 10k each is a much better option here.
Simaudio forces are mainly bass dynamic , and soundstage( separation).
Luxman is king at midrange palpability and meatness. It’s midrange and highs organic signature will make the  Moon sound sterile.

iam sure speakers like sasha daw will benefit from the extra power.also for many folks when monoblocks is not an option plus an extra power cable, having good powerful single power amp is more practical and viable option than using monoblocks which would require 20A circuits or dedicated power outlet.you can still run 860A V2 out of a 15A socket.
@whitecamaross
WC
like you  used C900U with M900U, do you plan to use a simaudio 740P with simaudio 860A V2 to see if its the best option.??
Not at this time. I have bigger plans and I can't strap money on other components. That is all I'll say for now.
Lmao, the 740p is not even in the same ballpark as the C-900u....

Goodsource , please do your research first, WC already owned the 740p and it was destroyed by almost anything else that came in his room.
@techno__dude
you are missing the point.c900u may be a great preamp.but its a question of synergy.like the c900u/m900u have great match and synergy, it cud very well be possible for 740P/860A V2 to extract the best performance
@whitecamaross
WC

no worries.i understand you that have to spend  cash wisely on your next components.
based on what you listened so far with 860A V2, do you have any thoughts on matches/synergy with pre-amps like 740P, pass labs xp-22 or c900u or something else
@techno__dude
also luxman has a sweet sound and as preamp does play a role in sound signature who knows c900u and 860Av2 may be a bad idea and may be 860Av2 would start sounding sweeter and not as dynamic then.

also its hard to say c900u and 740p are in the same level or not.they are priced in the same segment although 740p is a dual mono design where as c900 is not.

to add one scenario, also soundstage when they did  a review of m900u had tested with 740p along with c900u had said it was equally good.

also 740p can be massively upgraded by a separate power supply 820S which c900u cannot even dream of as it has no such upgrade path.

Sim 860V2 seems like a competitor to the Gryphon and Merrill 118, all in the clarity camp.  Please do a listening shootout among all 3.
Last hear I asked WC about the 740p. He said clearly it is not even competing with the big boys preamps.

The 860A only has 75 wpc more, with two huge transformers instead of just one in the M-900u. That means the Lux has simply a better quality transformer, in a much higher class... If you do research, you will find the Lux transfo has solid core flat copper winding ! We are talking same weight amplifiers... it’s plain quality vs quantity.

They mobilise a special team for 2 months each year to make the M-900us at Luxman in Japan. At Moon, the 860A is build by the same workers that make their cheapest ACE integrated. ( in Boucherville , Quebec)
Amp rating:

A couple of things....after naming each category (1-10) and describing each one in detail and giving examples of each one, when you did finally go through and rate the Sim 860a v2 you skipped over category #6 (Soundstage Width & Depth). I had to go back and re-listen, write down each score in each category, add them up to deduce that category #6 = a rating of 6....no thoughts on why you rated it a 6....no big deal.

Also by using a rating system of 100 I'm guessing that the scores could range from 10-100. 10 being the worst score (1 point per each of the 10 categories) and 100 being the top score. I realized no amp could possibly score a 100. You stated that an amp either falls into either one of two categories....#4 Sweetness or #5 Slam & Dynamics. So no amp will score a 10 in both categories...right?

You described the 'Sweetness' category as "amps that are very sweet...like tubes". I don't want to get into the old 'tube amps are colored' thing but I very much agree with the YouTube poster 'stephen barnes' who posted on your channel saying...

"I don’t care for the way the sweetness rating is done. That skews sweet sounding amps with a higher score than a more neutral amp that maybe provides a better sound at neutral than one that is sweet but maybe dosnt stand up to the neutral amp in the quality of the sound. It assumes that sweet is the preference over neutral, since we are all trained to believe a higher number equates to better, where in this case it does not relate to better in my opinion."

Thanks Jay for all the hard work you put in for our enjoyment....it is much appreciated!
@ron.
yep, that is why i said some categories might work their way out. This is all the beginning and adjustments will be made as time passes when it comes to categories.
I personally have decided that i want to keep one sweet amp and one dynamic/explosive amp (momentum s250 and gryphon respectively).
i don’t believe one can compare a sweet amp to an amp that isn’t -such as soulution. I have tried in the past and i noticed it is too difficult to do. If you like luxman then you will love constellation, momentum. If you like Simaudio then you will love gryphon.
Now, let me just say that OF COURSE you can help an amp become "sweeter" by way of cabling, sources and obviously using a tube preamp.
Which is exactly why keeping the sweetness category makes sense. Definitely keep that.

A clear indication that the current categories may be too heavily weighted away from sweet sounding amps is by considering how 2/3 WC’s all time best amps per $$ (see one of his videos in 20’s- meaning his 20th or 21st video or whichever it was where he anointed ) are Luxman 590AXii and m900 amps.

Since WC himself rates these so highly (top 3 of 300 for the $$), clearly when he is ranking them they should score very highly (after all, he rated them top 3).

But I wonder how highly they’d score with these categories (maybe WC will tell us), and if they do not score really highly in this overweighted resolution/clarity/detail dominated test, then something must be wrong with the test categories.

That fleshes out more of my initially stated concern with the categories. We already know his top 3 of 300 for $$ - he told us. Some new arbitrary test wouldn’t change that. At minimum any test where WC scoring those three needs to score them very highly for test to be valid (with WC ranking them of course - if another ranking then things would be different bc anyone else may not have those as top 3 of 300 for the $$, but WC does so any valid ranking test he administers should have categories that correspondingly result in commensurate scores for his favorite amps.

(Yes I know he didn’t say those were 3 best he ever had, only for the $$. But we are talking 300 total, per his estimate, so that is top 1% for the $$)
Keep something in mind guys,
Let’s say I had given the simaudio a 98% overall score, WHERE would I place the simaudio 888 MONOS if I got them ? Where would I place a pair of gryphon mephisto Monos ? 150% ??
Gotta keep things in perspective for today and the future amps that will come.
techno_dude,

Two mono amps usually produce the same character of sound on the continuum of sweet vs neutral/accurate, just give more power than the single amp version.  There is even the risk that the signal which has to go thru double the circuitry will be more veiled.  Most music except for relatively infrequent peaks needs only a few watts, so for clarity it may be a step backward to use 2 mono amps, unless you want abusive high SPL's and don't care about clarity.  So the 2 mono Luxman M900u at $30K retail will still yield sweet sound, vs the more accurate/neutral Sim 860V2 at $18K.  I would prefer the Sim to the Luxman, either single for $15K or double for $30K.

WC,
The Merrill 116 for $22K is very nearly the equal of the 118 for $36K, according to Merrill himself.  Let's hear the 3 way A/B/C of Sim/Merrill/Gryphon.
I totally appreciate the fact that Jay really loves 'sweet' sounding amps. It's just that he has two categories that are opposing...Sweetness vs Slam & Dynamics. If you score high in one you will score low in the other....according to the reviewer. And of course having one of each (amps) as a reviewer sounds like a must....just like having different sounding sets of cables etc.

I think the score of the Sim 860a v2 @ 71 is fantastic and right where it should be based on sound, value and all of the previous amps the reviewer has had and will have.

Jay, just curious how you would score the Luxman M900u in JUST the 2 categories of Sweetness and Slam & Dynamics?

Thanks again for your tireless work!
It would be interesting to hear your take on the CODA #16. It is being described on A'gon as being sweet as the Luxman m900u but a 10/10 in dynamics and slam. I have a callback with a local dealer to have a demo of the  CODA #16 before I pull the trigger on the Luxman m900u (which I know well). Dealer still does not have the #16.
IMO ,the bass and slam comes from the power supply capacitance which can take care of the surge needed during spike of transients in music for slam and attack and that is 240,000 micro farads in simaudio 860A v2  and its double of whats there in luxman m900u and d'augustino momentum s250 power amps.
