looking for suggestions of movie soundtracks that have a consistent mood or tone for most of the recording...

Check out the soundtrack for "Dead Man Walking." One of my favorite soundtracks with consistent tone throughout.
Twin Peaks
Straight Story
Paris, TX
Vampyros Lesbos
Stalker(not technically the official soundtrack but re-imagined by Lustmord & Robert Rich)
The "Twin Peaks" TV soundtrack is very good and very moody.

The soundtrack from John Carpenter's "Vampires" is also very good and got great reviews on Amazon.

Enjoy,

One of the best soundtracks ever made has got to be Passion, Music For the Last Temptation of Christ by Peter Gabriel. Heck it's one of my favorite albums of all time . If you've never heard it, it's a must have.
I forgot about Passion. Great album! There was a SACD available as well. How could I forget one of my other favorite artists Michael Stearns. The Chronos, Sacred Site & Baraka soundtracks are all great. What about Tangerine Dream's work on Risky Business? Now I'm on a roll...all of Popol Vuh's stuff for all the Werner Herzog movies? My favorites of those are Nosferatu and Aguirre. I saved the best for last...Blade Runner by Vangelis.
Two words - Hans Zimmer

Thin Red line, Gladiator, oh my God - Black Hawk Down...

Also the score to The Crow, soundtrack's good too.

Synthfreek, surprised you didn't say A Clockwork Orange.
Agree with Ejlif and Synthfreek. Passion is the one CD that I would want if shipwrecked on a desert island...... Fantastic but for some it take a few times thru to really like it. I had to listen to it several times to really start to enjoy it, but now its my all time fav.
What about the soundtracks to Traffic and Solaris? Those are both pretty good too. Also a great great on that is kind of hard to come by is the one for the Brothers Quay movie Institute Benjamenta.
Check out The Mission by Ennio Morricone . . . very beautiful and well recorded.
The Red Violin has long been a favorite of mine and recently been released in an expanded version that I have not heard. Another is Yol with a Middle Eastern sensibility. Paris Texas is a good one with some vocals that are moody but may not be consistent to your thinking. Oh, The Fountain may be what you're looking for, check it out.
Hey Ryan, looks like i'll have you to blame for buying a Peter Gabriel disc... Haven't seen any John Zorn listed yet, Filmworks VII & Filmworks XII stood out as really good ones.
Also might like:
Denison/Kimball Trio-Walls of The City
Banco Del Muto Soccoroso- Garfano Rosso
Try the soundtrack to "Breaking And Entering", a collaboration between Underworld and Gabriel Yared.
Maybe not what you are looking for, but Quinton Tarantino's soundtracks-especially for "Pulp Fiction" and "Jackie Brown"-certainly set a certain type of vibe.
Once we get rid of Gladiator, PeterGabriel and Vangelis, top spot for "moody" musik goes to David Lynch CDs (yes, of Moolholland Drive fame). Sublime and deeply disturbing...
Nils Petter Molvaer soundtrack is almost as good as his "Khmer" masterpiece.

The Lover, Gabriel Yared
Sophie's Choice, Marvin Hamlisch
The Last Emperor, Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Byrne, Cong Su
To Kill A Mockingbird, Elmer Bernstein
W/E, Abel Kornzeniowski
The Straight Story, A David Lynch film w score by Angelo Badalamenti
The End Of The Affair, Michael Nyman

Under the Skin

That was a weird movie and a creepy/haunting/beautiful soundtrack.
Not sure if it qualifies as moody but it does have a consistent vibe:

Hell or High Water Soundtrack

I forget the movies' name...but the Richard Thompson penned soundtrack for the guy who tried to live with the bears..

Did not turn out well.
Most soundtracks do not have a consistent feel throughout due to the inclusion of a few cuts. I sometimes program my CD to skip those cuts but mostly I forget and have to push the next track button. These tracks don't fit the overall tone of the piece, but were included for specific scenes in the movie.

Regardless, here are some good ones:

Planet Terror
Mission Impossible (the original from TV)
Touch of Evil
City of God
Almost anything by Morricone

Unobtainium:

The French Connection
Thunder Road

I also have to second both Gabriel's "Passion" and "Hell or High Water", both excellent, although quite different.

@goldenear1948

Check out Michael Brook's "Albino Alligator".  Moody, atmospheric and with great sonics.

Here's a track to sample...

I’m surprised nobody mentioned any of the extensive works by Danny Elfman.

Also Terminator - relentless soundtrack of impending doom

Also Brian Eno’s soundtrack to Opera (the 1987 Dario Argento artistic horror flic)

Not a movie but the music of TV series Peaky Blinders is all moody (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave etc) https://www.tunefind.com/show/peaky-blinders

Sideways; Ocean’s Eleven & Twelve; The Gauntlet; Dirty Harry; The Exorcist; Home Alone; Star Wars.
