If you like Melody's Live in Europe, be sure to also get her Live at the Olympia Paris on Blu-ray. Outstanding! |
Thanks guys, I will put the suggestions on my audition list!
|
Oh goody. More new voices to check out. Thanks, folkfreak! A system isn’t much without great music. I will also check out Madeleine Peyroux and Patricia Barber. I love sultry female vocalists.
While I am at it, I would recommend an all-Spanish CD called La Llorona by Lhasa. An incredible voice. European Spanish and that of some South American countries is so liquid and sexy. It can make French sound vulgar in comparison. |
You know you really shouldn't restrict yourselves to the old audio fool chestnuts like Krall, Gardot, Peyroux and Barber -- there's a whole wide world out there! Try (going off memory without my collection in front of me) And there are hundreds more ... anyone of which can provide loads of great test tracks if that's your bag :-) |
Melodie Gardot and Dianna Krell are just great singers. If you like these two voices and you also like daring exploring jazz instrumentals tossed in for good measure: try Patricia Barber. Barber has the “voice”and the is “different”, too. Not a better than Gardot or Krell suggestion - Barber is another wonderful female jazz vocalist PLUS a kick ass piano woman! Female jazz vocalists - just the most wonderful music to my ears. Happy ears!

Over the Rainbow from 'My One and Only Thrill' and Mira from 'The Absence' are a couple of my favorites. |
You guys should also check out Madeleine Peyroux if you have not heard her.A beautiful, slightly smoky Billy Holiday voice.. |
Stumbled on her when looking for new music... I heard about 3 secs and knew she was the real deal. Lovely voice and some great backing. I thought it good enough to revive this older thread to try and get the word out to some who didn't know her like myself.

Please excuse my ignorance. I dont know what love format is. I dont know if it is available in Vinyl, as that will be my next round of upgrades. But, it does have a lovely photo of the back of a woman on the cover of the cd.
|
Ok I’ve read enough. I’m ordering that set. I wonder does it come in love format also? |
Agreed, MG is a little dark compared to her contemporaries. Happy Listening! |
Thanks arafiq. That will be my next buy. I agree she sounds pretty different from Krall. But, one female live cd led me to another. Gardot is darker and has a softer voice. I just really like live stuff, and hers is darn good. Its amazing how good, powerful music in almost any genre can get the adrenaline going. |
Her last album, Currency of Man, is my all time top 20 favorite. The first 6 tracks on the album are just out of this world. |
Waiting On my 180 gram vinyl of Gardots Live in Europe, already a fan from her previous releases. As far as DK I will always be a fan as well, they are quite different to my ear.

+1 on the quality and tonal range of M.Gardot when compared to D.K...If you aren't familiar with M.G.'s personal backstory you should check it out.Absolutely amazing what she has overcome... |
“Bad News” is just plain mind-blowing, like a lot of the good parts of a great blues song, a great jazz sound, and a roucas female ballad, all boiling around my living room for 11 minutes. Left me breathless. |
Oh my. I am listening to the 2nd cd. Even better. “March for Mingus” has piano, base and wind sections that are a blast and make me proud of my little system. Best $20 I have spent in a while. Darker and livelier in places than Krall’s cd. But, in my opinion as good or better. Music like this is why I have a good stereo and no wife. |
