"Please only chime in if you compared the two with the same system and same room, otherwise it s just pure speculation as to which is better."
Even if you did that its still pure speculation. |
Actually,
The definition of speculation is "forming opinion without firm evidence"
If someone has heard both speakers in the same system and same room, the person should be able to offer evidence of the differences. That is what I am asking. |

Yes, but the differences will vary from person to person. In this case, there's no such thing as firm evidence. Even if we both heard the same exact system, we'll still say different things about it. Its like relying on magazine reviews. Sure, it may work sometimes, but at some point, its still going to blow up in your face. There's too many variables that can't be controlled. |
I haven't heard them both in the same system, so I wouldn't speculate as to which is 'better'. I would say that these two speaker designs are so different sounding from each other, that after a listen to them even in different systems it should be easy for most experienced listeners to make a choice as to which they prefer. |
I'll take the speakers that are made in America and sold in China. |
Good choice Taters, my taste agrees with yours. |
Magnepan says virtually free of Chinese parts, they might still be using a small electronic part from China, in which case if you are really true to your position, you should buy another 100% USA made product instead.
My goal is sound quality / value, the speakers can be made on Mars.
I have heard both speakers and think they are both amazing, just curious if one is better then the other if put to the test head to head with all things being equal in the room by someone with an objective audiophile background.
Thanks |
Winefix, your question is not realistic. The best system for driving the Maggie is not the best for driving the Goldenear. The best room positioning for the Maggie is very different than for the Goldenear. You're never going to be able to do a fair side by side comparison.
You've heard both loudspeakers, which did you prefer? |
Thanks,
I own the Triton ones and am considering getting the 3.7i as my needs are now more two channel. Just don't want a lateral move.
Both sound amazing, but would want to compare them at the same time. Should be able to use same equipment, heard my Triton ones with Rogue Cronus and Rogue uses Magnepan at the trade shows so I've read. Thanks |
Maggies need plenty of power so which Rogue amp you're talking is important. Sure the Apollos would drive any Maggie, but smaller amps, not necessarily a match. The strengths of these speakers are really different so cautionary comments from Onhwy61 and others should be heeded. Given personal preferences are going to dictate the answer to your question, I'd emphasize that Maggies have been a safe bet investment wise for many years and that reputation has got to worth something in terms of both servicing in the future and potential resale value. Cheers, Spencer |
Thanks, all good advice
Rogue has been using the Cronus with the 1.7 Maggies at shows, and the 3.7i are rated the same efficiency, so might be a great choice.
Both brands have equally terrible resale value, (just saw a pair of 3.7 go for 3k on Audiogon) So, not concerned with that aspect. So perhaps, Ill grab a pair of 3.7 used and convert to "i" status and play both in my system and see which one gets put up for sale.
That was my plan at the outset, before I get started, I was just was curious if anyone else has compared them properly as both speakers receive the most accolades from reviewers and fans alike for the 5k and under category.
Best, |
Both Onhwy61 & Sbank's post's are exactly right. At least I think so.

That's a good idea, but with those 2 speakers, its easier said than done. I was never able to get a good demo of Magnepan speakers, so I went out and bought a pair of 1.7's. I put them in the same room as my Vandersteen 2's and did the type of comparison you're talking about. In the end, I feel it was worth the effort, but I can tell you that you'll need a variety of equipment for best results. The setup needed to get the best sound out of both pairs of speakers was very different.
Your current components may be a great match for the 3.7's, but I wouldn't count on it. My recommendation would be to see if some friends, or even a local dealer, will lend you some alternate gear to try. Someone above mentioned Rogue. Cable Company is a Rogue dealer. You could have them send you some components to demo. |
Thx Zd542,
Makes sense, could be a bit of fun swapping equipment in and out.
I also have the Vandersteen 3a sigs (new version) in another location And they will be going on audiogon soon, as I find them too polite for my tastes. |
