Might try an Oppo 103
Low cost SACD player with remote, display and SACD over HDMI
I wanted to 'try' SACD and finally (I now have 3 additional player now and hand, bought before getting deeper in that stuff) have one that actually plays SACD.
And I must say I LIKE IT (the Dark Side of Moon REALLY convinced me to add this format to my portfolio).
So now I would like a player (still needs to be LOW cost in common terms and SUPER CHEAP in Audiogon currency) that has a bit more 'heft'. The one I use now is just a pound of plastic, and smaller format than any other equipment. But worst: it has NO DISPLAY so I have a PC monitor on top to even use it (Sony UBP-X700).
So SACD, DVD, CD, Bluray, remote, display. And SACD over HDMI (not component output), around $300 (but certainly under $500). Used is fine.
Does it exist?

MAX $500. hopefully $300. many suggestions are far above that. Used probably, and a word of caution: find one where the owner assures you of low use. The lasers do get progressively weak, and one of the first things to go is the ability to ’find’ the SACD layer. Ask for photo of the unit playing an SACD (if they have one) (iow, see the display show if found SACD). a lot of Sony's play SACD including some changers:

Might try an Oppo BDP-105, see below: Mike

@elliottbnewcombjr how does the OPPO DV-980H on ebay compare with the Oppo 103 I ordered? May need a 2nd SACD (non video, so 4k no concern) for the 2nd system. |
@mahler123 Out of my budget (lowest start at $800). |
Just a thought about the Sony xa5400-es. It is so good that you will re-discover your standard CDs as well as SACDs It is my choice after a big seek, went thru 9 players, happily told about it here. They are expensive, however, think about what you can sell, reduce going out for meals, save more aggressively. and, verify low use. complete laser assemblies are available. Consider that you will be paying premium for SACD's, so a compromise might be regrettable. ............................

@elliottbnewcombjr Was the Oppo 103 amoung the 9 you tested and compared?

kraftwerkturbo OP Yes, despite everyone here recommending OPPO 103 and 105, (I bought an Oppo 103) I did not see and difference from it's advanced video than my Sony Blu-ray player, and I tried audio only in my main system, both balanced and unbalanced, heard nothing better than what I had. Sold it post haste. Kept going, final pick Sony xa5400es highly recommended here. If you read the full conversation I linked, it has some amazing technology going on, truly rediscovered my many CDs, now buying both LPs and Used CDs again.

@elliottbnewcombjr I have a Oppo 103 on the way and will try it. Since it will be in my main system, it must integrate well (remote, HDMI, 4k) and easy to use, as well as provide good sound in 2.1 and 5.1 (SACD over HDMI) with my Onkyo. It was 1/2 the cost of cheapest (currently found) Sony xa5400-ES. So if it works, I have some justification to get more great SACD recordings :-) |
