Looking for Forte 1A 50w Class A replacement for Thiel 3.6s
Obviously you've been happy for the past 40 years and I understand as I have owned Forte and Threshold Class A amps, so why not send the Forte 1A to Jon Soderberg at http://vintageamprepair.net Doing a rebuild on it will make it better than new and you'll be good for another 40 years. You could also have them rebuild the preamp. |
Honestly, for the Thiel 3.6's the Forte' can easily be improved upon by an amp that truly has the current to deal the Thiel 3.6's impedance load. Ideally you'd have an amp capable of at least 400 Watts into 2 Ohms. Or a 100 Watt amp that can double down and double down again. It's the impedance capability rather than ultimate power that is key. Having an amp rated or better yet independently measured into both channels at 2 Ohms is where to start. |
gomemore3I’ve owned both, and individually both are very very good. Your very lucky you only listen low/medium levels, the Forte would have sufficed and done the 3.6’s proud. I would have clipped the Forte at my levels, Thiels loads not a problem, but 86db and only 50w is for me. Just pay and get it re-built, by a well known repair technician, like Jon Soderberg http://vintageamprepair.net Cheers George |
Gents thanks an for the input. 1. I will look at and join the Thiel owners page.. 2. I had a serious capable technology guy of the past 40 years re-bias in the last 6 months, did some refresh and it operating great , my concern if i send to Jon and spend $800 and the transistors go, I believe we are done... finee, correct? maybe not |
