Wilco - try Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Sky Blue Sky White Stripes - anything really +1 Okkervil River - someone mentioned them above, try the Stage Names The Sleepy Jackson - not new, but Lovers is great album The Flaming Lips - I like the older stuff, but try Yoshimi Black Keys - I see you have Dan Auerbach on your list already The Decembrists +1 Calexico Spoon Mumford & Sons - I really dig these guys |
Yes I just learned about allmusic.com after I started this thread and I just heard about pitchfork last weekend but I've been busy at work and haven't had much time to really check it out. Before I was just using amazon.com and wikepeda. I did find a lot of music I really liked but I had to work for it. You guys have made life easy on this old music lover. But now I'm busy listening to all this new stuff. I love it. Keep them coming. |
I'm cutting and pasting my Top 50 of The 2000s for you to check out. There may be some stuff on here you'll like. The only criteria I had was not having multiple albums by the same artist. I also had a Top 50 Electronic albums hence the weird title.

very good list, I have similar music taste to the op. Vampire Weekend - Contra and The XX - XX are a MUST. |
Wow! You're just finding out about allmusic? Pitchfork is THE site for all of this style of music. I'd recommend trawling through their Best New Music section going back a few years. Tons of links to samples too. |
A nice website that Dusty told me about which is excellent to cross reference your music is allmusic.com It tells you about the band and gives you a list of artists with similar style music. |
Person Pitch is the name of the album by Panda Bear btw. Excellent modernization of Brian Wilson at his best. |
Person Pitch Herbaliser Chris Joss Foals (UK) Bonobo Blockhead
Special thanks to the Bongoman for turning me on to Herbaliser and a few others enumerated in other threads. |
One artist I have enjoyed is Chris Cacavas. I believe he lives in Germany now. Chris played keyboards for Green on Red in the 80's and has done a lot of work with Steve Wynn from the Dream Syndicate and Chuck Prophet's solo work. His cd's are more easily available in Europe on the Blue Rose label. All of his solo efforts are excellent and fit stylistically into a lot of the alternative music you have mentioned. Enjoy. |
Try - Peter Wolf's Midnight Souvenir, Rounder Records 40th Anniversary Concert, download a recent Cowboy Junkie show from their forum page. |
Dusty
Thanks. I forgot Vampire Weekend. BTW: love the XX. |
Great thread! I think Brightblack Morning Light would fit in with your taste, Detredwings. Folky, slow, psychedelic vibe... new music from Cali. |
Neko Case...Fox Confessor brings the Flood & Middle Cyclone
The Audreys...Australian band with not a ton of recognition yet here but extremely talented, original. Sort of haunting indie americana sound, minimalistic with beautiful female vocal. Highly recommended. |
|
Great thread! Not much time at the moment but a quick second for Cat Power. In line with some of the very best that have been mentioned and would seem to fit your taste well. Back with more later...
Oh and Sufjan Stevens too. If nothing else, listen to the song John Wayne Gasey Jr. from the Illinois record. Haunting, beautiful, creepy and powerful.
Mark Lanegan too! |
Nice list Bongofury. That will keep me busy for a while. I have already started on Heyitsmedustys. Good stuff. There is so much good new music coming out on small labels or self produced. It's nice to give them exposure as well. I think a lot more people would like to hear the stuff if they knew how to get it. Heyitsmedusty maybe you could tell them about the download site you told me about. $20 dollars a month is very fair for downloading a lot of new music. |
Oh yeah, put The Swell Season on the list. |
Florence + The Machine "Lungs." This is going to spin a few times this weekend. I think I'll print this thread and take it to National Record Day hunt tomorrow. |
Bongofury - Great job. That's a solid list. |

Thanks guys. I guess the stuff I listed in not to main stream now? Like I said I never listen to the radio and I've only learned about the music by word of mouth or just checking out stuff on Amazon or cross referencing using Wikipedia. I have to say that the Indie Rock/Folk whatever it's called is really good. When I left the States I didn't see much really new good music. As I said I like pretty much all music but this Indie Genre is a lot of fun. |
If you like rock, you should try Alejandro Escovedo. His recent recording "Real Animal" is excellent. Title song is about Iggy Pop. I love his "A Man Under The Influence." I've seen him twice live . . . kick-ass R'n'R! |
Fleet Foxes Phosphorescent-Pride Local Natives Built To Spill The Microphones-The Glow Pt. 2 Neutral Milk Hotel-In The Aeroplane Over The Sea |
They're not really under the radar, but if you haven't listened to Nickel Creek, they are some good mainstream "newgrass." Abigail Washburn does some very cool stuff combining traditional mandarin speaking with american folk music.
And if you're listening to Iron and Wine I'm sure you're already listening to Ray LaMontagne. He's just a genius with a beautiful raspy voice.
I would also suggest Tilly and the Wall for some really cool pop mixed with stomping percussions. Aberfeldy is also fun summery pop.

Thanks a lot. I have already started checking some of them out and enjoying them. I also like some of the new stuff that has the folk feel to it. I really love the acoustic guitar. I also like Big band and female jazz also. Really a lot of everything. But I still listen to the Rock primarily. |
I missed a few easy picks based on your preferences:
Fionn Regan Sufjan Stevens Spoon Keren Ann Raconteurs |
Fantastic list. I can tell I have almost the same taste in music as you, since you named some of my favorites in there. Here is some stuff I that I'm sure you either have, or you are going to really like:
Caroline Herring - Golden Apples of the Sun Clare & The Reasons - Arrow (awesome phil collins cover on this one) The Dodos - Beware of the Maniacs Freelance Whales - Weathervanes Gossip - Music for Men MGMT - Time to Pretend Mirah - Advisory Committe Okkervil River - The Stage Names Passion Pit - Manners The Phenomenal Handclap Band Shout Out Louds - Work St. Vincent - Actor Taken by Trees - East of Eden Temper Trap - Conditions Tunng (be patient on the first track, it gets really good after a few minutes) Wild Beasts - Two Dancers The XX - XX
Go preview these albums on eMusic.com or Amazon to get a feel for them. Or just download them, I'm sure you'll like 90% off this list.
