Thanks a lot. I have already started checking some of them out and enjoying them. I also like some of the new stuff that has the folk feel to it. I really love the acoustic guitar. I also like Big band and female jazz also. Really a lot of everything. But I still listen to the Rock primarily. |
They're not really under the radar, but if you haven't listened to Nickel Creek, they are some good mainstream "newgrass." Abigail Washburn does some very cool stuff combining traditional mandarin speaking with american folk music.
And if you're listening to Iron and Wine I'm sure you're already listening to Ray LaMontagne. He's just a genius with a beautiful raspy voice.
I would also suggest Tilly and the Wall for some really cool pop mixed with stomping percussions. Aberfeldy is also fun summery pop.

If you like rock, you should try Alejandro Escovedo. His recent recording "Real Animal" is excellent. Title song is about Iggy Pop. I love his "A Man Under The Influence." I've seen him twice live . . . kick-ass R'n'R! |

Like I said I never listen to the radio and I've only learned about the music by word of mouth or just checking out stuff on Amazon or cross referencing using Wikipedia. I have to say that the Indie Rock/Folk whatever it's called is really good. When I left the States I didn't see much really new good music. As I said I like pretty much all music but this Indie Genre is a lot of fun. |

It's nice to give them exposure as well. I think a lot more people would like to hear the stuff if they knew how to get it. Heyitsmedusty maybe you could tell them about the download site you told me about. $20 dollars a month is very fair for downloading a lot of new music. |

Oh and Sufjan Stevens too. If nothing else, listen to the song John Wayne Gasey Jr. from the Illinois record. Haunting, beautiful, creepy and powerful.

Neko Case...Fox Confessor brings the Flood & Middle Cyclone
The Audreys...Australian band with not a ton of recognition yet here but extremely talented, original. Sort of haunting indie americana sound, minimalistic with beautiful female vocal. Highly recommended. |

One artist I have enjoyed is Chris Cacavas. I believe he lives in Germany now. Chris played keyboards for Green on Red in the 80's and has done a lot of work with Steve Wynn from the Dream Syndicate and Chuck Prophet's solo work. His cd's are more easily available in Europe on the Blue Rose label. All of his solo efforts are excellent and fit stylistically into a lot of the alternative music you have mentioned. Enjoy. |

Before I was just using amazon.com and wikepeda. I did find a lot of music I really liked but I had to work for it. You guys have made life easy on this old music lover.
