Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

frogman I don't know if you have ever been to Salvador Bahia Brazil. My ex wife was born there. This is the reason why I have been to Brazil so many times.

Salvador Bahia is a small peninsula on the Atlantic coastline 500 or so km north of Rio De Janeiro. It was on this peninsula that the Portuguese first discovered the land.

The port city of Salvador became the first capital of Brazil. It was also the hub where everything was imported and exported came and went including slaves from Africa. There are many different Portuguese dialects spoken there because a large number of the slaves, when they became free, stayed in and around Salvador and the province of Bahia.

There are some really delicious food recipes that are heavily influenced by African traditions.

So, for me, Salvador is my favorite place in Brazil.

010 I know you have dreams of lying on the beach with the Cariocas all day long but I would also visit the beaches of Salvador.

Copacabana, Ipanema and Rio is a little to "touristy" I have been to Carnaval in Rio and in Salvador and Salvador is much better.

Today I am cooking Feijoada which is a traditional Brazilian black bean and pork beef stew served with white rice and collard greens.

There are so many different African rhythms from Bahia; I'm trying to capture some of them, but the current ones are not the one's I remember from a long time ago.

I like these rhythms, but I can't find what I'm looking for; the rhythms I'm looking for were very common there when it was "Bahia", and they were truly unique and hypnotic.

Pjw, maybe you can find some of the older music from Bahia that's not as you say "touristy"

You have lived the life I dreamed about.
pjw, I have been to Brazil once; to São Paulo in 2001.  It was a fantastic experience.  Fantastic music and beautiful women.  Sexiest language on the planet, in my book.
FYI, on W 48 St. in Manhattan is “Brazil Grill”.  Been there many times for the best Feijoada that I have ever had.  Would love to know of you and/or your wife have a favorite Brazilian spot in the city.

**  (Brazilian) black bean and pork beef stew served with white rice and collard greens. **

....and some still question the mingling of African influences in American culture (Jazz).
Ate depois.

010 I first visited Brazil in 1995. I went to Rio (of course) but I met my ex wife in Rio. She was born, however, in Salvador Bahia. She met a man from Sweden when she was 21 and they married. She lived in Sweden with him for 12 years and they divorced. She stayed in Europe after she divorced but visited Brazil every year. She had family there in Salvador and Rio. I met her on one of her vacations to Rio when I first visited Brazil. We were married 14 years then divorced.

During our marriage we visited Brazil 1 or 2 times every year. Mostly to Salvador Bahia sometimes Rio.

So the music I heard playing in the streets of Salvador day and night was not that old as I was never there before 1995. However I believe the "street music" I heard night and day was heavily influenced by African beats and rythm. Lots of booty shaking and chanting and some of it even sounded a bit like Reggae.

The following is Brazilian "mainstream music" played on all the radio stations.

Ivette Sangalo:

Daniela Mercury:

And here is Carnaval in Salvador. Its called "Trio Electrico" Basically its tractors pulling moving bandstands down the street at a snails pace with all the popular musicians from Brazil performing.

And here is Carnaval in Rio which is strictly Samba music and Samba dance schools competing against each other. This is what all the young men all over the world come to see because the "SAMBA Girls" are so scantily dressed. I like Salvador's traditional Carnaval better. Unless you like to sit for hours watching scantily dressed woman dancing to samba beats which all sound similar.

This is 3 of the winners "crowned" by the judges for their booty shaking skills

frogman you were posting as I was making up my last 2 posts. As you now know my Brazilian wife is no longer with me. But yes I know of "Little Brazil" 45th St. Manhattan. I have never ate at the place you mentioned but if they make authentic Feijoada I am sure its a great place.

Yes Feijoada is yummy. So is Picanha!

I like to go to Churrascaria Plataforma on 49th St. between 8th and 9th Ave.

Dom Um Romao has incorporated every rhythm that's ever touched Brazil, I'm sure to find this rhythm in his discography;

I find this music and voice so soothing; I exhale, breath deeply, and relax when I hear it. Now I'm floating on a pink cloud taking in the most beautiful music and voice I've ever heard.

Mary_jo and Alex, I noticed you guys haven't posted since we changed subjects.

The way this works, if you don't feel comfortable posting on the present subject, you simply post on whatever you're into at the moment. Have no fear, when we deviate from mainstream jazz, it's only a temporary condition, we always return.

Personally, I'm enjoying the deviation, but as I stated, it will run it's course.

Frogman and Pjw, you guys submitted such fantastic posts that I went back and listened again, I also verified that "Son Cubano" is my favorite.

This music came from Africa, but I don’t think you will find it on the continent of Africa; I’m getting closer, I can tell, because none of the comments are in English.

O-10, I do not know about Alex, but samba is not my cup of tea. I find it too joyful. :--)

My father never was in Spain, not to mention Mexico, yet somehow, he is very fond of music from those parts.
Who knows from where all our likings towards some music come from?

I listened with cuorisity music that its been posted lately and its very nice music indeed, but its just that I do not feel that its ’related’ to me, which is funny thing to say because I cant honestly find some rational explenation why do I feel very different when its ’classic’ jazz in question...

I mean, white boy from somewhere near eastern europe, with house full of jazz music....it sounds strange even to me....

I guess I’ll just have to listen more and try to hear better my inner voice speaking....just hope that I will not hear ’bunch of guys’ whispering...

Will wait for ’my turn’ to post something, dont want to interrupt the flow...

**** it sounds strange even to me.... ****

...and you think that is strange (unexpected) ? 😊

Mary_jo, express yourself, why shouldn't you enjoy looking at handsome men, I never tire of looking at beautiful women; just a little while ago, I wanted to pursue  all women named "Ursula".  (must have been that look of love thing)

Alex, I no longer ask questions I can't answer, when it comes to music, just go with what you like.

Modern jazz was created by people who lost their ethnicity, color of skin is not an 'ethnicity'.

The way you and I connect with Chicago jazz is one for the mystics, but as long as we both enjoy the music, who cares.

Frogman, beat this...

Mariachi Band from Croatia, singing in croatian....on national tv...
many comments on spanish, below....

This is some of the music I was looking for; it's truly hypnotic, I can listen to the music without going into the religion, although the music is an intrinsic part of the religion. This is the real deal from Haiti.

Is this kind of spooky?

Alex, I found a brand new record in my collection that you might like. The cover is like new and so is the inner sleeve, and the grooves look like they've never been played, although I must have purchased this record at least 40 years ago.

I quit playing records when CD came out, so some of the records I purchased at about that time got stashed in the closet and were never played.

"Monaural" Sonny Rollins Vol. 2. Jay Jay Johnson, Horace Silver, Thelonius Monk, Paul Chambers, with Art Blakey on drums. BST 81558

O-10.
Being a woman, it is expected from me to be enthusiastic about men but not about women. But I have no issues in showing the admiration towards good looking woman. If you appreciate beauty, you will like it in all shapes.

Men are not less interesting, only different. Usually it takes time with them to see what you sense at woman immediatelly due to man’s "stronger" look, "tough guy" appearance and similar.
In another words, I have to get to know a man, to admire one.

I guess I’ll just have to listen more and try to hear better my inner voice speaking....just hope that I will not hear ’bunch of guys’ whispering...

If that happens you tell them, one by one guys, I can't hear you if you talk all at the same time...
I like BB and Luciano but can't picture them together so these two beat Mariachi from Croatia. ;---)

Mary_jo, men and women are different, I will never understand women, but I will always love them.

Since you are a women, no matter how much you try to explain, I won't quite understand, but I will always love you. God just let all the stops out when he created women, because they top everything else.
O-10, but what is there to understand? Often, things are much simpler than we think they are.

I'm almost at the end of my quest. Let me explain how this quest began. In childhood my primary exposure to music outside of the radio was at the movies, and I was attracted to Mexican music in cowboy movies, drums in Tarzan, Voodoo music in horror movies. This was outside of what I would call normal music in the Midwest.

Presently, "jazz" is normal music, but I'm also attracted to "Cubano Son", Haitian Voodoo, and Afro Brazil. To my ears, Afro Caribbean, and Afro Brazil is more African than Africa, although Africa is where it all originated. The slave trade explains how and why this is so. I maintain they transported the "musical soul of Africa" to this hemisphere on those ships, and what I stated above is proof of that.

Another thesis of mine is that we are attracted to music that existed 200 years before our birth via DNA; in other words we are drawn to the music of our ancestors. That would explain my attraction to music in my childhood; 200 year old DNA. Maybe you should listen to your DNA?

Listening to my ancestral spirits has enhanced my enjoyment of music that's hundreds of years old; this music exists now as it did 300 years ago.

I don't associate the music with the religion, I just like the music; maybe it's my ancestors talking to me?

Where is Rok? I hope he’s doing ok. I think he may have locked himself in his library so as to not be disturbed while he reads Giddins’ “Celebrating Bird” for the tenth time. So much to learn; so little time! Get ready, y’all, detailed analysis and explanation of “Indiana changes” forthcoming 😊.

On the other hand, he may simply be putting the finishing touches on the Ornette Coleman in effigy piñata that will be the highlight of today’s Jazz birthday celebration. Happy birthday, Pepper!

Those are interesting thoughts O-10. And when will you finally start writing that book of yours? You surely have something to say and you know it how to say it right. Me and Alex (I speak on his behalf, he won't mind) are coming to book promotion.

I am serious, don't laugh 'cause I see you laughing. :--)

I hate to disappoint you but I think that the reason is less sophisticated. He is probably getting ready for new lockdown. Bought few new chickens, two ducks, dog that barks and a donkey. They all need a place to stay so he has hands full of rearranging the home for them. New time, new needs.

Thanks for the compliment Mary_jo.

I like the music you posted, fortunately I have it.

In regard to music, I like this, that, and the other thing, but since apparently no one else likes "the other thing"; I'll only post this and that.
Orpheus, thank you for Sonny Rollins recommendation, as great as he is, I find his sound 'to hard' for my liking. Have few albums, of course, but must admit that I do not listen his works often...

Here is one album that perhaps you dont have....

album  'Jazz from Carnegie Hall Live in Amsterdam 1958'

one-day concer ,featured  in various combinations in the jam session style, Lee Konitz, Zoot Sims, Phineas Newborn, Jr., Red Garland, Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke.

Thanks acman for the introduction to  Monk'estra

There are so many talented musicians and this thread is the place to be so you don't miss out.
Alex, what do you think of this album with Sonny Rollins?

010 I have that Dizzy Gillespie disc as well as "Sonny Side Up" They are both fantastic albums. In this instance it is not the same release (with the same songs) under a different title which happens a lot with jazz music.

Each of those albums originally contained 4 different songs although my copy of "Duets" has 2 bonus tracks.
