I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Today's Listen: Walter Davis Jr -- DAVIS CUP Davis' debut as leader. All tunes written by Davis. And, as the notes point out, these are 'real' originals, not lifted from another genre. Apparently he was very promising back in the day as a composer, his name being mentioned in the same sentence with Ellington, Monk, John Lewis and Jelly Roll Morton. rok, , that Brize Norton went so fast that when the guys jumped I involuntary went forward as if to "stand up" .Love to see the greatest military thing ever , the AC-130 . Must be, a "Puff" saved me and my 229th Pathfinder Det. The 229th AHB , "Winged Assault", was the most decorated unit in the Vietnam War . |
pjwDid you go to the Chick Corea concert last night? I had great seats 8th row orchestra . His working band ( Christian McBride, Brian Blades)Played about 2 hours total,including an encore. 3 Monk tunes, 2 standards, several Corea original tunes, and several classical pieces. The sound was excellent and the bands playing and interaction were top notch as expected. They have a new double cd , titled Trilogy 2 . Have to buy it Their first cd was a triple cd set, i will post something when i have time. |

rok , I have always been doubtful about what the guys got upon return. I came back twice , once to Fort Lewis and once to San Francisco .Went back to Syracuse on commercial Airlines , once from SF and once from SETAC With change both times at JFK .Walked though streets and airports for many hours in my uniform with the 13 medals and 3 unit honors I rated .NOBODY gave me even a glance , much less any insult . I got indifference, which was OK by me . In war there are no good guys . |
schubert, I'm a Viet Nam era vet, but not a Viet Nam vet. I saw much of that country via aerial photos but thankfully was never there. I was in college for just over two years before joining the Navy. That included being on campus the fall of 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. There was great patriotism on campus then with many talking of dropping out of school to join the military if necessary. Compare that to the fall of 1966 when I returned to finish my degree, attitudes and society seemed to have changed completely. When I started school the Student Veteran's Association was a respected group. When I returned, even though some students wore military surplus fatigues, anything otherwise military was shunned. The societal changes over that four years were so great it was stunning. |
pyrso, Vietnam was a totally unnecessary war where 50,000+ Americans and several million innocent Asians died for no reason other than the one President Eisenhower warned us about , the greed of the military-industrial complex . Hardly a surprise that those in Universities caught on to this . Patriots see what is wrong and try to fix it , Militarists go the "my country right or wrong " route which is the path to hell . As soon as I left the Army in "68 I talked and ACT- ed my way into the University of Minnesota though I had never gone to high-school and had been in the Army since age 16. First day of class I stood on the bridge over the Mississippi that joins the east and west of the campus and watched several thousands of students have one hell of a uproar against the war . That was not my way , but I thought"good on you kids " . |

I'm a Nam Era vet who never went to "Nam", but I had a friend who went, and we celebrated all night long when he came back in one piece. Just like in "Apocalypse Now", he had to go back. When he returned for the last time, he was so messed up in the head that no one hardly knew him. I had to do some research in order to find out why, because every time he started telling me about things, he broke out in tears and was never able to finish. My research revealed things too gruesome to repeat. |
acman3 thanks for the Chick Corea Trilogy vids. these three guys have such a chemistry and locked in when playing together. The cover of the album says it all with the smiles on their faces. this happened frequently at the concert with them smiling while playing together and it was obvious The Joy they have performing live.The classical compositions career performed whereby a composer named D Scarlatti, oh I never heard of. Maybe some of the classical listeners on this forum will know who he is. |
Yes , O-10 , but I wouldn’t call them pansies . Most who know what time it is are aware that it is hopeless . I knew it then .I went back voluntary because I was a highly skilled Platoon Sgt. ,which the Army had few of,and knew I could save lives , both American and Vietnamese . nsp, just Google D Scarlatti . He was/is one of the3-4 greatest key board composers who ever lived for starters . |

Just to be clear schubert, I'm well aware what a foolish and unnecessary waste of lives and resources the Viet Nam war was. No disagreement there at all. But my point was about more than the patriotism exhibited in fall 1962 compared to the disillusionment and unrest four years later. It was the change in social perspective and involvement over such a relatively short period of time. It took a mistake as large as VN to do that. Since the draft was ended, we have been almost at a constant state of war, with hardly a discouraging word from anyone. I guess the protests were related to who was doing the fighting / dying. The draft was ended because draftees ignored the "water walkers " and they could not, would not ,disciple them because of GOD efficiency report.Several then 0-1 and 2 are only walking around today because of me and they don’t even know it . I’ve seen a lot of stuff from A’gan etc and discipline still leaves a lot to be desired . And I know what I am looking at ! SOS . The drummer is 75 years old and still pounding away .I got a good chuckle . Sax line is close to my favorite noise , Ron Carter and Gonzalo Rubalcaba with HIS .44 mag ! Cheers |

Delta finally got rid of their ancient 777-200’s on their non-stop from MSP to Seoul in favor of brand new Airbus 350-900 . I was one of the few who did a decade and a half and never went to the ROK .I was on a draft once , but it was changed to 8th ID when they remembered the 8th ID over in Baumholder needed a few Pathfinders .. The 100 $ payment of a debt I forgot to a clerk friend up at Div. had nothing to do with it . Bucket list . . |
Schubert, I will miss your very honest and "truthful" comments in regard to our state of affairs in these perilous times.
