Jazz for aficionados
I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

I need to pay attention to this group, especially the drummer! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPvK-dYNoGE |
Some things new, and some old. For those who don’t bother reading Stereophile, here is their primary jazz reviewer’s list of top albums for 2018. https://www.stereophile.com/content/best-jazz-albums-2018 |
There has been a bit of discussion on this site about the value of new artists and current direction for jazz. I just received this link from a friend. It is a PBS special which addresses this issue. It runs nearly 1 1/2 hours so I've not watched it myself yet. But knowing some others may be interested I wanted to offer it right away. https://www.pbs.org/video/reel-nw-icons-among-us-jazz-present-tense/ |
I'm a sucker for stride piano and so favor almost anything by Art Hodes and "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now" in particular. Vince Guaraldi on "A Flower is a Lovesome Thing" is a piece a go to again and again. (Guaraldi described himself as a "reformed boogie-woogie piano player," which is close enough to stride for me.) |
Acman, I have several Frank Moran albums, this one is my favourite, I guess, with Kenny Burrell. Posted it before, but maybe somebody else will pick it now... https://youtu.be/yVpgOAvZ6Fs https://youtu.be/p2AdSYd27kE Also, Phineas Newborne was mentioned as well, but perhaps few cuts that were not https://youtu.be/PEloKpsF7cE https://youtu.be/2wux46Y8Mjk https://youtu.be/1XLbLKf9GnY https://youtu.be/87YROPcgL5Q ...and one as sideman https://youtu.be/nilp-xPq0Y0 and few Christmas songs, but with very soulful feeling, from Kenny Burrell... https://youtu.be/acKNXdmJD-I https://youtu.be/FW9Cv-VwFJ4 https://youtu.be/LetCkAi_Vao ...one for a guy that mentioned Vince Guaraldi... https://youtu.be/DEmhPs0RAek |
Great clips all; thank you! Not exactly your typical “sleigh ride” kind of vibe, but one leaning more to the serious side of Christmas. One of my favorite Christmas song renditions. For me, McCoy’s playing simulates the way a composer uses an orchestra in its sheer size, weight and variety of color. Amazing playing: https://youtu.be/TdGuxP8BzsY My favorite current jazz clarinetist. Sleigh ride time; or, at least a stroll 😊: https://youtu.be/abnwSXusocw Even when his voice is not having a particularly good day, the singing and story telling is wonderful: https://youtu.be/Dla_RC2XBzo Merry Christmas everyone! |
Glasper!!! First piano player to record that beautiful tune: https://youtu.be/7C_CmjL6Irc But, on this record, in the composer’s band: https://youtu.be/-M2ADUgffFE |
...a moment for nice thoughts and wishes. Do not be stressed since whenever you feel like that, just remember that stressed means desserts spelled backwards. Merry Christmas everyone. https://youtu.be/ZrQQaiaN1O8 |
Not your normal CTI recording. Anybody got any favorite CTI recordings? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA1ZelIbUfI |
