How many NICE looking high end floor standing speaker are there at present
Hi, Sometimes when I dream, imagining of replacing my current 1997 Burmester 961 speakers, before maybe COVID19 is sending me to an early grave - I'm practically only stumbling on ugly often even like somehow crippled looking speaker creations. Test will say, sounding fantastically gorgeous and - looking like 💩. This, or par tout looking like some or other children's coffin ⚰. 😥👻
Not for the life of it, can I imagine ever having some such 'creation' invading my daily living space. Ever.
Talking 'bout a BAD WAF situation, I say.
Some makers are trying to improve on this tragic situation with creations looking far too anatomical or something alien👾 fruit thing hanging off a tree... handle an' all.
Is there no hope out there at all...? 🤔
So can one savely move on forgetting about a replacement, still in this here life, and saving the money 💰 ?
Well, the budget <= max 20k $ lets say, so I won't risk starving before the lockdown will end ever. 😱
Please check out the GT Audio Works planar speakers which include the open baffle servo subs. The speakers are very unique in that they do not have a crossover on the main 6 foot panel and are the only open dipole speakers that utilize a proprietary membrane which is almost Kevlar like to prevent all distortion and resonance that you typically get with a planar or electrostatic speaker. Stereophile- reviewed them and stated they can go toe to toe with any speaker cost no object. they are available in any color the customer so desires and even in a high gloss veneer.
"The Elac Concentro S 509 significantly enriches the market for extremely high quality loudspeakers. Visually, we rate the new design language from Kiel, which was already started with the Concentro S 507, as extremely successful. Clear, at the same time sweeping lines, a chic base concept and not too wide due to the side bass drivers: This is what modern sound transducers look like. Acoustically, the Kiel construction also pulls out all the stops. The immense lightness towers above everything, this spacious airiness with which the S 509 performs all tasks. It can also push properly in the bass range and always remains very precise, but what is really impressive is the playful, sophisticated reproduction of all the tracks that we played to the speaker from the far north. Accordingly, the Elac Concentro S 509 earned 100 percent our highest test award."
I always found the Acoustat Model Sixes to be very nice looking and unobtrusive. Could never understand why a succession of ladies vehemently disagreed.
What a waste of time..if looks are important research, google whatever !! If they don't sound like tin cans buy em. It's all personal, rather futile trying to tell someone what to like, Emojis aside...
"I wouldn't have them in MY living room" Michelle, you would hate the look of my speakers more than any in the world. "You wouldn't be sitting in MY sweet spot"
Hm, makes me wonder... are you trying for first price in fuglyness? 🤔 Maybe you just kidding? Not posting your system though, might be a clue,- that you mean it. Now a girl could always be cajoled to part take in some blind(folded) testing in an audio-den, no? 🤔😊 So long its not my living room - it be just beholding odd stuff. I've seen my share, without making any noises. Seriously 😊
Sorry too, um, retro - or maybe not enough retro for my liking? They will sound nice as you say - as do so many... In fact these soet of 'long boxes' ⚰, they remind me of my early German aquistion of a pair of ELACs. Those had also good test results, but of course for recommended 'Einsteiger' hifi. I'm sure these Spendor D series will be superior, by how much, who knows?
In any case, those plain Englophile designs are too 70s, never mind 80s... to my likings. I then had a pair of AR7s, which I really did like (at the time). Alas, - 'times they are a changing...' eh? Michélle 🇿🇦
Just goes to show that everyone's tastes are different! I just love how the Spendor D7 looks in my system. I love the clean lines and walnut wood look. Plus they are pretty small and dont impose much on the room.
justmetoo, Unfortunatly (for me) my speakers have been long out of use as I've been looking to move to a larger place to house them properly, hence I regrettable offer no system page. YouTube "JBL 4550"(375/075:4550) those are identical to mine. Model 4676-a. Pro Series. I'm sure you'd enjoy giving them a visit, just not marriage to them!! Your statement "I wouldn't have them in MY living room" gave me a very excellent laugh as I can imagine many husbands hearing that exact response. 😩
I'll stay with my statement... 🔥 maybe one way to handle those items? 🤔 Just crossed my mind... so much more to express , but will more better hold my tongue 😝 💭... Michélle 🇩🇪
My two pairs of amplifiers (45 & 300B) are the Yin, and my speakers represent the Yang. So I try to be balanced (but RCA). Of course I yam what I yam. 💪🏻 ⚓️
@isochronism Well said, - ugly as sin - but well balanced, no? Speaker are practically always the first noted (visually) - warts an' all. On the other hand, reversing your yin - yang setup wouldn’t really work, now wouldn't it?
So... no beauty contest, eh? Hopefully, some day soon enjoyed again in your (new) man-cave? 👍🤣
Perhaps, ugly as sin - no beauty contest. My idea is that they will sound good and one can alway's close their eyes. Perfect for a man-cave ora caveman? 🐒
@isochronism Let me rephrase, it sounds so unkind me having said that. And your restating it, makes me feel sad to read. So, no, not ugly, just a bit, um, extraordinary perhaps? 🤔 I'm mean those are your babies, no? So, I beg your indulgence for my 'ugly' word. Yeah, we learn as we go. Um. 🙄 Sorry for that dear. Michélle 🇿🇦
Just a BIT ugly? Those are your babies? Now you'd be insulting my Wife as if her offspring would be homely. But of course, I have no Wife since I'm allowed these speakers. Plus, she'd be insulting ME for choosing such ugly ones! You see Michelle, we both are losing this battle together. 😂 Isn't this fun!!!! 😜
Now => Extraordinary, no?! Really 🥰 Am not beyond to, um, embrace extraordinary, see? 😉 And they're YOUR (very OWN) babies, not your wifes - please note the difference, eh? 😊
I'm somehow pretty sure your wife, former or otherwise, had sweet funny Adams to do with their 'conception', no? 🤭
So my very best wishes for them, to find a happy new place! Soon. 👍 Best, Michélle 🇿🇦
The Davone Ray-S are very pleasing to look at, Actually soothing in a refined way. Real wood, and a very organic way with music, always smooth yet can fill a large space with terrific imaging. Great comments everywhere on those very special loudspeakers.
Michelle, You are fully correct 🎯 I have only myself to blame, and clearly can see the elephants in the room 🐘🐘 it is a joy to get each other's take on these matters along the way (and personalities) of which is the equipment. At the end of that line, the soul is the goal. 🔉🔉 In appreciation of your well-wishes to home them soon, I also hope to do a system page.🤞🏻It's nice to see the environments where the music is enjoyed. 🛋☕️ You'll find your's and at the opposite end of the scale as mine. 😄
@isochronism Isochronostically speaking - it sounds like you made the right choice. In particular if they sound as great, as they don't look. Kind of counterintuitive, eh? ☝️
Its still some enigma to me, how such a cupboard, or is it sideboard, equipped with drivers, can create sound anywhere near to the intended recording.
This, I'll admit, must be due to my lack of audio-engineering training.
I'd consider to rearrange them perhaps as an chimney mantel piece? Alas, we beheld earlier, they not quite flame resistant... 😕
Michelle, I honestly DO appreciate your fleeting attempt at TRYING liking my speakers., for me, at least. Actually the other two times I mentioned these in other threads no one had any experience or much to say. Granted, your interest is in lighting these on fire ⛽️ .... at least it IS SOME sort of attention. All is fun and we both found our own likes. 🥂
@yoby Too homely looking - somehow... Seem too have this 'green renewable energy look' about them (why do I think knitting coarse lambs-wool cardigans now?) or made of bamboo or so? L = 1/(SQ - X) ? 🤔
Also, if more than one tweeter - mo betta have second placed in rear. ✔️ Giving those others seriously a miss.
Two stacked AMTs behind a wave-guide are fine; L = SQ 👍
But thanks, for sharing your preference! Michélle 🇿🇦
I know it's already been mentioned before, but Avalon Acoustics speakers with a Jeff Rowland front end. I've seen a lot of people recommending boxes with drivers that all look the same. Avalon sure as hell doesn't look like much of anything else but with all the veneer finishes, can match just about anything. A bit of a personal recommendation, but I find the pairing of the sleek and polished Rowland gear and the tight, angular, and still somehow smooth, Avalon speakers to be the perfect match.
Almost completely agree with your take/tast. My only 🤔 caveat (these days...) is their predominant use of drivers like having cermaic membrane and metal dome tweeters. Looks and make/quality are right up my alley 😍! As for the Rowland gear - great - ! so long its not class D... 🙄 Ever so picky, eh? ☺ Michélle 🇿🇦
No class D here! An older Model 112, all AB power. I much prefer the older sealed cabinet and Charles Hansen designed Avalon speakers. The older ones tend to use an aramid (kevlar or nomex) for the drivers and the tweeter can be replaced with a ceramic one direct from Avalon
