Green Mountain Audio

I picked up a set of Diamante's for cheap. They have trashed foam surrounds but otherwise seem fine. I plan on veneering the "marble" with a beautiful teak or rosewood- I haven't decided. The angles will look pretty cool with the right veneer. The marble is not so cool but rigid and heavy.

Curious if some upgraded drivers would improve the sound- as apposed to re-foaming. I realize this is a shot in the dark but my understanding is Roy from GMA has passed so not sure where to get driver advice. Open to any and all suggestions.

I'm sure when you get them sorted out you will be quite happy with them.

How much do they weigh?

The woofer is ScanSpeak 21W/8552 Classic. Tweeter is also Scanspeak  D2010/8513. The midrange is Eton 4-203/25 HEX. The tweeter is still available in a slightly different form. Drivers look high quality. The surrounds were cheap and May attempt this. I have a message into Madisound asking for compatible drop ins. The marble is just ugly for my tastes but the design is very cool and with a proper high end veneer job these could look exceptional. Also will polish the aluminum around speakers to see if I can mirror it. The drivers all have a part number sticker- Kxxxx where the X’s are numbers. Assume these are GMA part numbers. the foam diaphragm covering the tweeters have pinholes- not sure how to deal with that. I only bought these because I know Roy was a gem and didn’t want these to go to the waste bin.

I'm thinking Green Mountain used ScanSpeak, that's why I suggested it's likely there's a drop in substitute. Of course, I have no idea why I think that. I could be completely wrong. Oops! Stupid auto correct. I wrote refoaming.

If the the drivers are OEM labeled when you pull them please post the info for future researchers.

A simple phone call and a couple of questions answered.

That to me is easier than reforming decades old drivers if there is indeed drop in replacements.

FWIW I was a big fan of Roy's speakers, and owned two pairs over the years. I did not own the Diamante, but I expect that they would be well worth renovating. I would also be inclined to first try replacing the foam, rather than tinkering with the drivers.

Tend to agree to look at getting surrounds fixed, especially if the crossover is first order and requires the driver to operate across a wide range without breakup.

Not necessarily.

If you know what brand drivers your Diamonte’s have, you can call a company like Madisound, let them know what drivers they are, and they will recommend a drop in replacement if they carry a superior compatible driver, which they probably do.

Let us know what you decide.

The chances of finding a suitable drop in replacement driver is extremely remote.  Drivers have so many different operating parameters that have to be considered in the initial design of a speaker, and the driver must be matched to other drivers through careful selection, modifications of the drivers, and design of the crossover, such that it would be almost impossible to find a perfect match even if you knew all of the operating characteristics of the original driver.

Your best bet is to have the surround replaced.
